I have some cash to spare and thought about upgrading my current pc

Currently am running
Core 2 Duo E8400
XFX ATI 4890
WD Raptop 10K
4GB Memory

I was thinking to buying these items

GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1333
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
Thermaltake Frio
A-DATA S599 AS599S-128GM-C
Radeon HD 6870 OR Radeon HD 6850
Total Cost: $1100

what do you guys think? Should I even bother to upgrade?

Looks good to me!! Though what are you doing that you need a hex core for? You'd be better off with the AMD 965 BE and OC (it can hit 3.8-4.0 with no issues)

The ripjaws are fancy and worthless, they also don't play nice with AMD for whatever reason

These two are the most popular with amd builds over on OCN

Ditch the thermaltake, their products are ricer shit. for the same price roughly you can get the meglahelm

http://www.crazypc.com/products/prolimatech-megahalem-508600.html

or take the savings you get from dropping to the quad and get the Corsair H50

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010&Tpk=corsair%20h50

buy another fan for it and you got a bad ass cooler

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103894 lists as $180
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851 is $180 as well

Quad and Six cores cost the same ?

According to the website Prolimatech Megahalems CPU Cooler Rev B is only for Intel Sockets and is OOS

Actually, I have a question about memory. On that motherboard on newegg it states
"DDR3 1866(OC)*/1333/1066"
Would a 1600 memory work? I always did not understood this.

Also my case is Cooler Master HAF-932

No. PC is dead. Get a 360 JTAG, a PS3 and a nice telly for the same price.

You forgot the " Cool Face " mate

@besthijhacker: Imho the upgrade isn't strictly necessary, just overclock your E8400 and you'll be fine for several months Smile

hum, didn't realize they dropped in such price. I'd still go for the quad and OC, I would imagine less heat due to less cores working.

The memory will be fine, it's just stating it'll work with the memory at such speeds out of the box instead of having to dick around with settings.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3674/amds-sixcore-phenom-ii-x6-1090t-1055t-reviewed/9

an AMD 965 BE (black editions have unlocked MP) OC'd around 4.0ghz is on par with the i7 920 in games. You'd have more trouble OC'ing the hex

The meglahelm will work with AMD, apparently you have to get teh AMD kit for it so meh. theres also the noctua coolers that are really good.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608016

I personally have the corsair H50 with a couple noctua fans and <3 it.

I have jailbroken Xbox 360 that is sitting in the basement collecting dust for 6 months now

E8400 is OCed to 3.8GHz..

Those Noctua fans are quite expensive.

I decided to switch to AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition.

Total Cost :$1,138.44

I will wait for Black Friday before ordering these parts. Maybe there will be some good prices around the internets but newegg is the only place I trust to buy computer hardware from!..or I get impatient, I will order them next week.

Yeah good choices, although I don't get SpykeZ' aversion from the Frio. I've got one and it does its job perfectly fine, keeping my i5-760 at 35 idle, clocked at 4.2 GHz with a comfy 26-degree room temperature

I have a friend who just bought a 1090T (hex-core) and managed without difficulty to bring it to 4.1Ghz on air cooling without adding a lot of voltage.
