Seriously, spend $11 one month on Astraweb, then make up your mind if it's for you or not. You can also spend $2.99 on a one-month sub to Newsleecher with Supersearch to make it even easier to search and download stuff.

yes i am on 50meg and its fine (astraweb). They also do ssl and european servers for you too!
no you dont need to pay to search usenet. nzbindex is a free indexing site - there are many including nzbsrus
you might want to join something like newzbin or nzbmatrix, as they are the best indexing sites but DO have a small fee.
