If you use these, can you take a minute or so to answer the following?
What do you like about these sites, and what don't you like about them?
How could they be improved? eg: Better search, display more mods etc
Do you prefer Steam's modding system over the Nexus? Why or why not?

Of course i perfer nexus over the steam workshop only because its easier to sort through Nexus then it is the workshop.
Honestly improving the search function would help but i wouldn't know how you would do it from a development standpoint.

Steam:
+ Extremely easy to add mods (press Subscribe-button)
- Shitty search/filters and navigation
Nexus:
+ For me the features are perfectly implemented and don't need improvements
- Often shitty performance

I absolutely prefer Nexus' modding over Steam's modding, if only just for the far better searching and "subscription" service. I've had nothing but bad experiences with Steam's "subscribe" mod system and even searching is a pain in the arse :\ As for how I could improve Nexus...? I don't think I would/could, it's a very impressive site that has everything I need and without any hassle in navigation.

The results, for me, which are hit and miss more often than not - and many times it's just a blank page with "No results found..." even though you *know* there are files there. It's infuriating.

Pro's:
- One place for different games.
- Easy to sort by categories
- Download client
- Option to donate
- Sorted by Downloads/rating/...
- Better communication with the mod creators, higher quality of support than Steam forums (too much derp).
What could improve?:
- Faster speed, sometimes it's just too slow
- More games supported
- A better download client
I dislike Steam's system: it's cumbersome, too much derp, not enough control over it and I don't want Valve controlling the Mod scene. Some things should just stay out of the hands of corporations.

I tried Steam's system once, didn't like anything about it (structure, presentation, the automated way the mods are installed, lack of control from the user and so on). Basically that was the last time that I used it, and I hope I won't have to use it again.
Nexus on the other hand is my daily source for mod hunting/downloading, I find the sites very handy and complete with all the categories adequate to users that aren't housewives looking for Fallout Shelter's cheats. Honestly I don't mind the classic "look" either: usually when sites like these get overhauled they also tend to become obnoxious, so retro look always takes the cake.  A more precise research system definitely wouldn't hurt though.

I like Nexus more. It's easier to find the latest version of a mod, whereas on Steam I've sometimes accidentally downloaded older versions without realizing it. The one thing I like better about Steam is the convenience, one click and the mod gets installed. No messing around with other files or directories.

Perhaps another question should be, what makes an overhaul obnoxious? Or perhaps "10 things not to touch" |
To not turn it into a mobile site I would say. Too many times I feel my experience gets watered down for idjits and their mobile devices.
Would make me rage even more when it's done on a modding site that has no real benefits to function on mobile devices. |

There's a lot of wasted space on the sides of each page, but that's more endemic to website design these days rather than a problem with nexus alone (some mod descriptions are extremely long, even without changelogs, and embedded images doesn't exactly help with that; as is you have to scroll a lot to get through it all).
Would also be nice if the comments section was directly searchable without having to go into the forum thread and do a search from there.

@inz This.
I always liked the Nexus, the first time I heard about it. Marking mods to "follow" or simply giving a good mod author a good rating, it's been easy to use for ages.
I agree, making use of the space for wider screens, thus showing more content would improve it. Steam may be more comfortable for subscribing, but I don't see it being better, I'd rather use the Nexus and the NMM and do the downloading myself for a minor part.

The fact that i can add to favorites a mod maker and see what else he's releasing it's a nice thing for Nexus. The search definitely can be improved. I prefer Nexus to Steam Workshop without question. Not a big fan of the NMM. I prefer either the manual installation or dedicated mod managers for a specific game (if they are available).

Yep! This is what I meant in my post. Very often 'functional' turns into fancy, buttons get bigger, the text rounder, social sharing invades everything, and the useful stuff gets confined to a secondary role because the site has to mainly be pretteh and super accessible.

Those are tables, not design; it's the only way that (some) programmers can... "visualize" things.
Not their fault, really. It's always the know-it-all customer that considers that design and artistic touch is not required: Why pay extra for unneeded fancy stuff?!
I do understand that a designer could find that absolutely odious.

Well, I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions, I've not had any issues navigating Nexus.. all the information I ever wanted, included download links and even individual tabs for pertinent info such as separating videos/pictures/comments, have always been easy to use. Hopefully someone else has some aesthetic suggestions
