went to try and get my moms front usb ports hooked up and after I plugged in the MP3 player I was giving her to see if it worked and it shut off, now it won't turn back on period

Well, irregularities in the current can cause frying in extreme cases. If the PSU is not stable, a spike could cause some hardware to fry, including anything hooked up to the USB ports.

Looks like a short inside the USB connector. The PSU will not turn on but it must not mean something is broken. Check that connector and bend contacts back if necessary.

well fuck me! mom was all excited to have an MP3 player. Got them disconnected for now.
Have it hooked up to my computer and it won't even turn on :'(

Wait, the PC doesn't turn on or the player? If it's the PC, then it could be that the USB draws above the limits of the PSU and it won't power on. Does the PC turn on when the player is disconnected?

I had a computer in my office that fried anything that was plugged into the USB port. It was a faulty ground on the USB. Only took out a flash drive, and a external HD.
