...so it was just around midnight when i discovered this;
http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=211.0
it adds mouselook, high resolutions, fixes game speed and sound and everything for modern computers and such (dosbox + some new textures and binary patches)
...and now it's almost 7am
i never got around to playing it before..
at first i missed it in the nineties and in the 2000s the controls were already horribly outdated
not to mention you had to jump through hoops to get it to even run
but this fixes all the issues i had with it
the mouse look and the WSAD controls feel like in a modern game, and having played SS2, i fit right in with the interface
the squareish look and sprite baddies might scare some kids away but i don't mind it in the slightest
the game was clearly way ahead of it's time
give it a shot if you haven't already
here's some gameplay showing the higher res and mouselook
finished
gameplay statistics at the end said i played 10 hours 30 minutes
+ countless loads after i got turned into mush
lovely
i think the game could do with a remake
perhaps even with the SS2 engine.. i think it's weird it hasn't been done already
it's fairly playable now though
cyberspace is still awful to control but luckily there's very little of it
...never played SS2 BTW ...never played SS2 BTW ...never played SS2 BTW ...never played SS2 BTW
Play it, now! Doesn't have any technical issues, and there are lots of quality mods to make it even better.
Speaking of which, I should really re-install the first one..it's been so much time, I can barely remember it.
@Epsi: Indeed, haha. That was definitely directed to myself as well. Didn't play the game at release, but waited 4-5 years (I basically played both the games in sequence), which still means ~15 years ago
It's only recently that I re-installed SS2 and gave it another ride with the various mods (including the one posted by Shole) + Vurt's texture pack. Though I presume times are mature now to refresh those (great but fading) SS1 memories
i'm playing with the default system shock portable settings, and even have to switch the desktop resolution to 1024x768 to get a correct aspect ratio as intel gpu drivers scaling doesn't work with dosbox for some reason.
