|
 |
Ok a disclaimer. Before you answer my question, please read and uinderstand the following list:
- I have no intention of changing to DDR3 memory.
- I am aware I am using an older CPU
Now, with that said, here's my question...
I have a 4gb DDR2 6400 stick. (HP if you really need to know). On it's own, it works fine. However, I have the following sticks too; an OCZ Special edition 1gb stick, a 2gb and 1gb of generic branding, all 6400 800Mhz.
If I stick them all into my motherboard, I get horrific fps drain in gaming. I simply don't understand why. I am aware of the difference in timings, but I don't see why that would have such a dramatic impact on FPS.
For example, something like F1 2011 with just 4Gb at the lowest settings runs at more or less 60fps. With this memory in, it's dropping to as low as 25.
ANy ideas? I don't *need* the memory; everything runs fine with 4gb, but it would be nice to use it.

Well did you try to upgrade your memory stick by stick?
Maybe one of them has just silly bad timings and all the other ones will try to fall down to it's timing or even lower. Afaik
FUCK I just discovered the meaning of afaik all by my own *brick*

Check that they're actually running at the proper speed. Also make sure to use matching modules in the dual-channel slots - the best you can do with your setup is 6GB. 4GB chip in one channel and either 1x2GB or 2x1GB in the other. Mismatching modules in the same channel means things will slow down worse than the lowest speed; it'll slow down to the lowest common denominator of both (more or less).

I actually happen to have 2x512mb - I might just use those instead.
The other modules are all mixed. Pity, but 5gb is better than 4 I suppose
Now I just have to find them
btw WMI dropped from 6.9 mem/cpu to 6.6 and disk speed from 5.9 to 5.6 ?
Wish I could afford new stuff :\

Why 5? Just use the 4GB and 2GB sticks in separate channels?

I only used WMI as a reference... I don't actually take any notice of it otherwise
All my memory was 800Mhz, and none of them were matching. Anyway, I fixed it as 3 of my modules turned out to be faulty
So I have my 4gb, the OCZ 1gb and a 512mb And everything is tickety-boo again.
Oh, and my MB doesn't support dual-channel if you use 3 modules.
