Oh you're gonna be more CPU bound than GFX bound there, especially with all the post-processing todays games have.
But 5570 is still really crappy. Get at least 5770, or if possible geforce 460. My friend recently decided against 460, and got 2x5770 which cost him a tiny bit more because they were on discount, and performance was I'd say you get more bang for your buck.
Obviously you don't need 2x cards for that resolution.

Geforce GTX460 (768MB)
AMD Athlon II X3 440 (3x3.0Ghz)
Sharkoon 450W PSU
Vento Case (Midi Tower with 3 fans)
AM3 Mainboard (for example Biostar A780L3)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 750GB 7200RPM
2GB DDR3-1333
= 420 € = 351 pound
remove the case and psu if you have one and voila you can even take a better mainboard and 4GB RAM + maybe even the 1GB 460GTX as it has 256bit instead of 192bit

well it's an am3 board and an am3 cpu, why wouldn't you go with ddr3 ram?
I'm not sure if there would be that much of a difference though... the ram prices dropped as of lately a bit.
You should still take a look at some review pages if they recommend ddr2 ram on an am3 board and athlon II X3

Just upgraded a friends PC for about $350 which I believe would translate to less £ since the $ has gone to shit...

No, barely makes a difference for gaming, you could also opt for 4GB of DDR2 if it's that much cheaper where you live, but I doubt that. Pump's recommendations are good, although 2GB of RAM can be a bit tricky these days, but at your resolution it should be fine.
The only relatively bad part he's chosen is the PSU, as I'm guessing he's referring to the Sharkoon SHA450-12EUP, which only delivers around 360W on its 12V rails, and it's not very efficient. Around the same pricepoint you should be able to get an Antec Earthwatts EA-430D Green for example (watch out for the D in the product number; EA-430 is the regular one). Plenty of units around that pricepoint (45-50, which is what both of Sharkoon's 450W units cost) with at least an 80+ label, and some models like the EA-430D stand out within that price range

I'd take the system ManMountain suggested, and later use that extra money for a better monitor. Overall it's quite a nice PC.

At 1024x768 it probably is, yeah, but at higher resolutions it's gonna be doubtful

If your going to allocate more money on the system components I suggested above, then I would recommend replacing the 768MB 460 model and get the £50 more expensive GeForce GTX 460 1024MB combined with a 24" LCD monitor.
If you look around, Iiyama, BenQ or Samsung 24" LCD screen prices range around £165-185 Inc. VAT. It's really pointless focusing so much more money on the PC's internal components when your primary output screen is so poor. If 24" prices are too expensive, pick up a 20" Dell LCD for £116 Including VAT. You might also want to increase the storage capacity by getting 2 x Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB drives, costing £106 including VAT and delivery.
Of course, around the £800 mark you could get the following pre-built system bundle:
Intel:
"Verso Viper" Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz Quad Core DDR3 System
- CPU: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58A-UD3R (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
- Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5570 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3-12800CL9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
- Optical Drive: LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)
- Case: Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower
- Power Supply: Corsair TX 650W
- Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 64MB Cache
Add in a Dell IN2010N 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black as well
Sub Total : £736.79
Shipping : £12.50
VAT : £131.13
Total : £880.42
Once you've saved a bit more cash, upgrade the graphics card and hard drive capacity at a later date but the end result is a system that will have a good life span.
AMD:
"Titan Cyborg" AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 3.60GHz DDR3 System
- Case: Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
- Power Supply: Corsair TX 650W
- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz overclocked to 3.60GHz
- Cooler: Titan Fenrir EVO CPU Cooler
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H AMD 760G (AM3) Motherboard
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9
- Hard Drives: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
- Graphics Card: MSI GTX 470 1280MB GDDR5
- Sound: 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)
- Optical Drive: OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)
Add in a Dell IN2010N 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black as well
Sub Total : £689.98
Shipping : £12.50
VAT : £122.93
Total : £825.41
The AMD system bundle ships with a stronger GPU, so all I would add is increase the hard drive capacity.

@Nalo, you are on CRT? If you are saving some more cash, you can take one of the systems above and add a nice 24" LCD. Shame if you have such a lovely system and don't enjoy it properly.

That Intel system is abso-fucking-lutely terrible. What a ridiculously bad setup, really. Exchange the X58+i7-950+6GB for P55+i5-750/760+4GB, get the same gaming performance but save 250 quid or more, easily. Stick that into buying a proper graphics card and a better PSU (the TX650 is one of Corsair's lesser units) and you'll get much more life + gaming performance out of it.
Is that from OCUK? I can't believe how big of a ripoff that system is, really.
I have an MSI P55-GD65, i5-760, 4GB, GTX460-1GB, Thermaltake Frio (CPU cooler), a Seasonic X-650 right now, with an NZXT Phantom on the way. Whole setup cost me ~930 euros, which is roughly 780 quid. Swap the case out for a cheaper one (Phantom is 140 euros), go a step down on the PSU with a Corsair HX-650 and it'll be around the 700 quid mark. It'll beat that i7-950 system in any game, because it has such a weak graphics card coupled with a CPU that's complete and total overkill for games :/
@ Nalo:
Post again when you've got the cash you want to spend on it together, by that time prices might have changed, especially on the GPU front
