|

So I notice something strange today, while working with a screenshot of the browser in NFOhump:
Notice how the colors in Photoshop are a little different than in the browser? This probably comes down to color management in Windows, but my question is, which is the color-correct one?

Or set PS to use a custom profile while loading images?

Maybe it's different color space?
This might explain the effect :

Same for me too (original is on the left). I think it could be because of color profiles. Try changing it...

Color profiles tend to fuck it up. If you're pasting from clipboard into a new PS document, when creating it select "don't color manage this document".
Also, Firefox has color management (about:config):
gfx.color_management.display_profile
gfx.color_management.mode
gfx.color_management.rendering_intent
Search on http://www.mozillazine.org/ for description.

I am relaxing with a fine scotch whisky ATM, and can't focus enough during the work, so I thought I might add a little bit more details to that Mirko said, that you may find helpful
So here we go… Leo, if you're working with color management on
- After pasting image select "Don't convert (preserve color numbers)"
- After opening image, select either "Discard the embedded profile (don't color manage)" or "Use the embedded profile (instead of working space)". Using embedded profile might not work if the app is not color management aware and embeds wrong profile.
Or just disable Color Management by selecting "Monitor Color" at Edit --> Color Settings…
Also pay attention to the "Proof Colors" option, it must be on too and set to "Monitor RGB" for images without embedded color profile or if you discarded it after opening
Here is, for example, a color readings within Safari just under the top left border
R: 46
G: 65
B: 99
and the readings within CS5 Photoshop with "Proof Colors" option turned off
R: 43
G: 63
B: 100
Numbers are a little bit off… So, the "Proof Colors" option should be enabled and set to "Monitor RGB"

Thanks for the in-depth information. That is what I did indeed.
Interestingly, your screenshots are posted look on my monitor like the Photoshop "version", haha. I assume each monitor has its own color profile?
Could be that my Firefox color management is a little off... I used to have a color management extension, and I'm not sure which settings it has had.
Edit: Hah interesting, so changing the gfx.color_management.mode to different values, for one can change the colors of the hump, but also changed how your images displayed... So it is either now ignoring color profile or actually implying it.

Most monitors have color profiles (Separate or part of their specific drivers.), I can't use mine though as Asus doesn't support Vista and W7 properly so stuff looks rather brown/sepia toned via previews and image viewing, instead I use a common standard one from Adobe though the default Windows one is probably OK and differences are quite minor most of the time I'd guess.
(Originally the Asus one is a bit more vibrant I'd imagine so it's kinda positive it's not fully working as that wouldn't give a proper image, monitor itself can alter between a few variations but I use a very standard setup for screens and such to remain correct, this site would be a bit purple-ish otherwise instead of light blue with gradients and dark blue for certain stuff, a light increase in saturation via CCC/Avivo - not the separate codec thing - is also used to enhance things lightly, similar to digital vibrance for NVIDIA cards.)

Screenshots look different cause I just took a screen of what I was doing in photoshop via screen capture utility and this utility embeds color profile, and I was too lazy to jump thru all the hoops So for such images to look right, the app drawing them need to be color management aware and ultimately you need to have a color calibrated monitor with profiles containing LUT gamma tables.
On a Mac this is system wide, so in all browsers images look the same and correct. On a Windows, color management is still funky, LUT gamma loader was only added in Windows 7 (Control Panel --> Color Management --> "Advanced" tab --> "Use Windows display calibration") and a lot of apps upon launch unload such table
As for browsers on Windows, IE and Chrome doesn't support color management - as a result my images will look darker as the browsers discard color profile. Firefox have in-house color management solution but I never managed to make it work, colors are always ways off. For me my images looks just like right image in your screenshot - much more purple than they should to be. For that reason I just disable color management support in Firefox.
Here is an image that will look the same(numbers wise) in all browsers be it on a Mac or Windows PC. Even in Firefox with color management enabled.
For color readings on Windows I use ColorPic free utility
This above image will look different in browsers on Windows(In Firefox with color management enabled it will look much more purple), on a Mac it will look the same in all apps but still will differ from how it looks on Windows, as I took it via Windows Print Screen, pasted in Paint.NET and saved as png file. Paint.NET embedded sRGB profile.
