Nothing?
It's why I haven't bothered upgrading my E8400 system yet. There simply aren't any games out that will truly benefit from the additional cores.

lol as me and a few have always said, if all you do is game then intel is overkill as it shines greatly in decoding, encoding, compression etc etc but it's on par with AMD.
GTA IV uses multi-threading, most source games do.

You won't see a lot of use out of 4 cores on games but what it does enable you to do is multi task like a mother fucker Watching movies, playing games on 2 seperate monitors while browsing etc etc never gets old.

Watch your $$ go down the tubes. Quads was just a marketing ploy. Kinda like Vista - no use for it.

Ehm why did you went for 4 cores if you didn't know what to do with it in the first place?

Found a page that benchmark various games on 1,2,3,4,5,6 cores.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/07/05/how-many-cpu-cores-do-games-need/2
Crysis use two cores, more cores does nothing
MW2 use three cores, more cores does nothing
MW1 use two cores, more cores does nothing
BFBC2 use two cores on ATI, 3-4 on nVidia
Stalker: CoP use two cores on ATI, one on nVidia
Dirt2 use two cores
DoW2 use two cores
Quote: | Conclusion
For those of you with a dual-core CPU, in most games it offers "enough" performance (at least in terms of core count), although it's clear that won't last much longer. While some developers are sticking with engines that aren't multi-threaded, if there's one thing clear from our testing it is that games are starting to make better use of more cores. At the moment, three cores appears to be what games are happiest using (aside from Dirt 2).
The conclusion for gamers is that if you already own a dual-core CPU then its likely to still be fine - if your games are slow, your graphics card is much more likely to be the culprit. However, when upgrading, it's clear the direction games are going towards, and a CPU with three or more cores is what you need to cover your bases for the future. |

Wait, what? Did they have any explanation for that one?

Not really.
Quote: | Interestingly it seems Nvidia requires three cores to get going whereas ATI only needs two. We repeated testing on both cards and found the results to be consistent. That said, using an ATI card also seems to cause slight performance dents with triple and five cores versus four and six - something which doesn't happen with Nvidia. |

I am guessing some engine misoptimizations.

@Leo
lol I misread the article , those two games take advantage of multi-core CPUs (=2 max) and clearly not quadcores. I couldn't test them anyway though

Haha true, but DiRT 2 wasn't THAT bad if taken as an arcade with no simulative ambitions imo.
As for SC2, well it was just...derpicly bad.

well again, you may not see the huge performance gain in video games, that's where video games come in, but quads are for heavy multi taskers. No way I could watch blu ray dvd's while playing intense video games on my old dual

I think having a quad core cpu helps with overall performance. The way I see it almost every piece of software will take advantage of the available cores. They might not be used to their full potential, but they are still used to offload certain tasks at least by the OS.
Also those tests are not really great. BC2 uses all four cores on my CPU just fine with an Ati card. And I am pretty sure that Crysis uses more than 2 cores. They show better performance with one core than I had with my Dual. They should have at least compared i3/i5 duals with i5/i7 quads...

@ Frant: On the Quad you'll notice higher minimum framerates, i.e. less stuttering. On top of that, the 4 GHz will help with the game that only use 2 cores, because you've got a high clockspeed on a very efficient architecture
