What is so wrong with ME? I never had any issues with it. It only had problems if you upgraded from 98 to ME, but a clean install it was smoother than 98. And had some nice additions to Explorer (like previews, information, etc).
ME was really a missed opportunity. They already had Windows 2000 released by the time they made ME, but were afraid driver developers would not make drivers fast enough for the home user, so they released this ME as a meantime kind of OS, until developers were ready. That is why the move to XP was relatively smooth (but not perfect). Anyone who has used Windows 2000 will tell you that XP was nothing but a reskin, especially before SP2, and it made the system bloated, so most people just turned off the ugly blue/silver/??? skins off and used Classic.
Microsoft should have done the same with Vista, release some silly "XP2ME" which would make all the noobs happy, while software developers learn to use Vista, and then Windows 7 to remove the old XP/"XP2ME" shit.

ME was a crapfest, even MS withdrew support for it within 2 years, back then you could get a PC with 98SE or Win2k but no more ME.
The Windows Driver Model made it easier for manufacturers to create and maintain drivers, WDM was introduced in Win98 already.
I am glad MS discontinued the 95, 98, ME line.
Win2k, XP, Vista and WIn7 are further developed versions of NT 4.0, MS hired developers from Digital to pull it off though, hence the suspected name joke VMS -> WNT (as HAL -> IBM).
Sorry no love for MS here, only OSs I have bought in my life are a Red Hat distro (basically I bought support) and OS/2 version 2.
