Ok, I've got a bit of a problem here and was wondering if anyone could help me out.
I've got a 285GTX which is clocked at 648/1476/1242 as standard, but if I OC it and go anything above on those numbers and then play a 3D game (such as BC2 or MW2) the game will after a couple of minutes alt-tab me to desktop and then back into the game.
When this happens everything in the game is slow as fuck and that's because for some reason the card went into some kind of power saving mode where it clocks itself down to either 2D performance or Low 3D performance.
Now, the card seems to be able to handle any type of OC I do, the card stays at around 65 celcius (on full load) when I pushed it to 702/1523/1320 and there are no visable artifacts. So I'm thinking that the card itself can handle it but it still clocks itself down no matter if I raise the speeds by 1 or 100.

First of all, I don't think it even does any automatic underclocking for power saving? Don't think the GT200 series do that. They only clock back when there's a problem.
Second of all, if it does that, then that means it doesn't handle the OC in fact. Try leaving one of the three at stock speeds, and test again. With my 9800GTX my shaders wouldn't go beyond 2020 (even though most users manage 2200 easily with it), but my core and memory went higher than the average OC.
Unfortunately, you can't tell which of the three is the culprit. Core is unlikely, but it can be either of the other two. |

I'm using the latest nvidia drivers, the 196.21.
Hmm...you might be right, I read somewhere that if the core shader goes over 1512 it starts fucking up so that might be it. I'll fiddle around with the clockspeeds abit and see if that helps.

Yup, seems that the core shader can't be pushed beyond 1512. I'm raising both Core ROP and the memory clock without any problems.

It's the same with my 5870 now, my memory doesn't go beyond 1220 due to the ECC in GDDR5. My core clock on the other hand gets up to 975 on stock voltage, where most need a voltage raise by then 
Parts vary from card to card, always try each clock on their own first to find out the maximums for each!
