|
 |
hy. I have a big problem with this router. my internet connection is by fiberlink.
When I connected the PC directly to the network i've reached speeds of 10MBs DL 1.6 MBs UP (at least I have not seen it the upload speed to have climbed more).
when I connect via router (WRT54GC), it limits the speeds somehow, especially the DL speed. in other words, It offers up to 3.5 MBs DL speed which is divided between 4 computers: 2 PCs connected via LAN and 2 Wireless connected laptops.
I tried resetting the router but that did not solve my problem.
practically the only thing I changed after resetting is the connection mode (PPoE), added the user name & password!
So, I can someone help me to set up the router so that it does not limit the DL speed to 3.5 MBs. the firmware is the standard that comes with the router
if it helps, here is how the contract looks like:
Maximum bandwidth in your town 50 Mb / s
Maximum Internet bandwidth in 50 Mb / s

Does not support DDWRT. You are stuck with vendor junk. Try updating the firmware.

That's not the router, that's a problem with your PC and/or cabling, or most likely, your internet connection.
Try the following:
In Windows, check the connection status: it SHOULD say it's connected at 100 Mbps
Says 10 Mbps? Check adapter configuration to see if you can force it to 100; to get there, go to the connection properties, then press the configure at the top. Under the advanced tab, there should be some options for speed and duplex. Auto-negotiate should work and use 100 Mbps full duplex. If not, force it to 100/full.
If the settings are correct, and you still only get 10 Mbps listed, or if it says 100 Mbps anyway, then your cabling is pretty horrible.
You say it's 50 Mbps and only get 10 when you hook up your PC directly to the modem? That's pretty horrible, ring your ISP to see if it can get better.
It's definitely not the router though, my cousin has the exact same thing, and although it's not one of the best routers, he gets the full 30 Mbps of his connection on the wired network. The wireless signal is shit on that router though, can't get more than 20 on it

and were can i find this connection status??? i have W7 and i must say i am not yet familiar with it's interface. sorry
but i'm pretty sure the problem is not my PC but the router. he is somehow blocking my connection and i simply don't know how. i called my ISP in order to be sure it's not a problem from them a few days ago and it's all well from their end and also from mine when i have my PC or any other PC directly connected to the network.
and when i say 50Mb -> this is the bandwidth not the actual download speed. considering my contract, i have a 50Mbs internet connection and a 50Mbs some kind of "city LAN" (can't really explain it) => 100Megabits/s bandwidth => 12,8 MegaBytes/s actual download speed. of course, due to some hardware limitations of my PC, i can only achieve about 10,5-11 MB/s download speed (not the issue).
so, what could be the problem??? someone somewhere else said that my router processor can't handle a higher speed than that. so, wtf does that mean??? thought i can't say i'd trust that reply i still consider it (more or less ).

as far as i can tell, my router only grants full access to a bandwidth of 30Mbs => 3,8 MB/s download speed, which is the speed i currently have....

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/h-2-h-asus-3com-mini,review-454-8.html says that your router should be able to handle a bit more than 30Mbps, but the review doesn't say with what kind of packet sizes the test was done, so it's possible that if you are working with small packets the performance is much lower. If the router has any sort of advanced firewall (e.g. packet inspection to prevent your CC# being sent out) that will have a big impact on performance. Wireless should be lower than 50 MBps, depending on distance no more than 10.

Linksys firmware is horrible. I also recommend junk it and get a router that runs DD-WRT. Any other routers are trash.

well, the MTU is set to auto and it works at 1492 package size. i tried modifying the MTU size but i can't change it to more than 1500. about an advanced firewall.... i don't know... could be but i have no idea where i can turn it on/off. anyway, from the looks of it, and from what i can understand the router simply does not allow me higher speeds. anyway, someone suggested a firmware update, i will try it and see what happens
so, does anyone have any suggestion what kind of router should i buy and use instead of this one? i need a router that can let me achieve speeds of 10MBs download.
you know, just in case i can't make this one work

With the risk of sounding biased, the one I have when my connection got upgraded to 120 Mbps is widely regarded as one of, if not the best consumer router. Belkin Wireless N+
On wireless, I get around 60-80 Mbps depending on where in the house I am. Given the amount of interference in our house, that's pretty good. That's on wireless N though, on an older laptop with wireless G it gets up to around 35-40 roughly
Wired is ridiculous. My PC is located on the 2nd floor, connected through a Cat5 cable, roughly 20 meters. I still get between 800-900 Mbps on it. I can't test a shorter distance, because unfortunately the only 2 wired PC's are my own, and the one downstairs
Regardless though, the speeds on this thing are amazing, and it's dirt cheap: around 60 euros over here. Just look up some reviews on the web, it's praised everywhere for its network speed.
The bad thing is that the network storage is fucking horrible, but I've got a HTPC for storage purposes anyway so I didn't care about that

this router is weird..... today apparently it has gone mad (or something like that). today i barely had any internet. i have no idea why. and besides that, i was unable to access it's interface while having the internet connection plug-in the router. got anyone any idea why??? cos i simply can't understand this. after removing that cable, i accessed it easily.
anyway, i managed to find the warranty for it and tomorrow i will take the router to the company i bought it from.

Routers are so cheap. You can get one that runs DD-WRT for $20 on sale all the time. I got a Netgear N router for $25, also got a second one bridged Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT too.

I would make sure it's not some strange QOS issue. My linksys has QoS settings in it, maybe that would be another area to look.

i will see. i took it today in warranty service. if they can't figure it out i have no idea what i will do. cos right now, i barely have any moneys.....
anyway, it's been a nasty router since i bought it. i can't send anything via the network provided by the router, it limits my speeds on LAN, Wireless drops sometimes (it has his days, sometimes it works for a full week without a problem and sometimes the laptops lose connection 5 -to10+ times a day), i can't access it's interface (it happened before when i had it connected to a modem and had a 6Mbs bandwidth & it happened now with the new bandwidth).... anyway, i will either trow it out the window if it doesn't work when i get it or i will smash it (or neither )
