OK so my PC started to get a little noisy so I started moving the IDE master HDD to stop the noise just to be struck by a BSOD (I know it's stupid)
when I restarted the IDE master worked fine but the slave (160GB) fucked up, windows couldn't boot
when I try to format it using windows 7 it shows an error that it failed
now it's detected in device manager but it's making strange noises and i can't access it

any help plox

Put the drive in an external case and test via usb. If still fails, freeze it. If still fails, you doomed.

When HDD's start to fail and make noises it is often the head positioning mechanism that does not work good anymore.
You should hear: tick, tick, tick...
The positioning mechanism keeps trying to place the read/write heads in the right place but it is failing.
One conclusion: this HDD is done for.
Unless you have tons of money to spend on sending it to a lab that can replace the faulty internal pieces and then read out the data, you better accept it as lost.

But don't take my word for it and see if it wants to work on another system or so.

You're right, it makes ticking noises and it can't stream data for more than a short while before freezing, I'm better off without it

You could try chuck the drive in the freezer for a bit to get it to work long enough to get the important files.
Don't just throw it in though make sure it's in a sealed freezer bag or the moisture will kill it.

Keep it in there for 24 hours or so though, this trick doesn't give you hours of usage, but minutes Razz
