According to Business Week, Riccitiello realized last fall that the secondhand market accounts for about a third of all games sold in the US, or $2 billion annually. This was money being lost.
Riccitiello reworked his strategy last fall at a brainstorming session with his executive team. One major goal: Grab back some of the revenue EA and others were losing as consumers flocked to used games. The secondhand market now accounts for about a third of all games sold in the U.S., or $2 billion annually, says Pachter. At the meeting, Riccitiello green-lighted "Project Ten Dollar," a coupon program to reward people who purchase a new game with downloadable content and upgrades. People who buy used games pay an extra $10 or more for the same goodies. To create online products quickly, EA cut a deal in November to buy Playfish, which makes free games for social networks.
Still, the fundamental challenge remains. "While it's possible EA can make the extremely difficult transition from providing a shiny disc in boxes to [leading] in digital, history suggests it's rather unlikely," says Eric Goldberg, a managing director at Crossover Technologies who consulted for EA in the past.
Riccitiello contends EA can succeed in both boxed and digital games. In the traditional sphere, the company's new Mass Effect 2 war game sold more than 2 million copies in its first few days, and the new Madden product will redefine the way people play video football, he promises. Meanwhile, EA is making more games available on more devices than ever before, from game players like the Xbox to PCs and mobile devices like the iPhone. "We stumbled some," he admits. "The stumbling is gone, the execution is there."

Second hand market is blooming because games are not cheap for many people.
In my country, for example, PS3 gaming is especially costly, due to low wages and lack of piracy, so pretty much everybody that owns PS3 is getting some games through second hand market, or by trading games with other users. It's just too expensive to be done in any other way.

I own a PS3 and i gotta say that you have to give a fortune around here to get new games for it. I mostly order online or get it through second hand. Giving 65€ for one game is just too much, no matter how good it is :/. So second hand is quite a good option if you get everything in good condition.

in other words : they will cut things from the original game that will be added by a dlc , the problem here is that those that get the game used must but this free dlc
so
you get shafted for not buying it retail thats retarded

yes it is fucking pathetic. no matter how you cut it, that 'copy' of the game has been paid for and is therefore entitled to its share of dlc. in a way this is double-dipping, because at one point that game was bought for full price, and its not like the original user can still play the game or use their 'owed' dlc for having purchased the game full price...
but whatever, doesnt effect me. ze games are all free anywayz unless i really like the game and buy it, and then i never buy used games anyway.
