ok i'll try to keep this as short as possible. until last night i hadn't connected to live since the first week of oct and didn't know if t had been banned or not and i didn't want my profile corrupted. why not unplug the HD and run a live connection test you say? i did, but it wouldn't finish the test until i took the facebook & twitter update, and without a hd there wasn't enough space to install it so i moved my tag to my memory card and allowed it to update.
as it turns out the console isn't banned and so i plugged in my memory card and signed into live. i browse for a bit and give it time to update MS's side with my new info from the past 2 months, and then i shut down and put my hard drive back on and recover my tag to it. why didn't i just copy it from the memory card to the HD you ask? you can't copy your tag from the HD to the memory card, it will only let you move it from one to the other. i wanted a copy on the memory card for safe keeping so thats why i wanted to upload it, then recover. well after all that, for some reason, my profile will not load up my modern warfare 2 progress. the profile on the memory card will, which tells me my save file is ok and that it's a problem with my tag. unfortunately recovering my tag from live invalidated the copy of it on the memory card, so i can't connect to live with it.
is there any way to force live to use the tag that's on my memory card? i don't really care about the single player campaign of MW2 because i'd already finished it on veteran but i have a lot of time sunk into spec ops and don't want to lose it. would that 360 save hacking site be of any use to me or the corrupted profile fix? from what i have read live will not use my copy on the memory card since i recovered it, so what i'm wondering is if i can recover the tag that's on live and hex edit, hack it, whatever so it will work with my MW2 save. i dont want to get my profile banned but i'm thinking that's my only option.

I would think if you have 2 of the same profiles 1 on your hd and the other on your memcard, just delete the 1 that isn't working properly , I'm not sure with that twitter/face-book stuff cus i don't use them on my console, xbox-live what a weird thing it is...good luck

well to clarify a bit - the copy on my memory card isn't accepted by live because i recovered the same copy of my tag from live. so it sees the copy on the memory card is unacceptable even though it's the exact same tag.
the copy on the memory card will work with my MW2 save but the one i recovered from live, which is identical (or should be), will not work with my MW2 save. i have no idea why. i've been reading up on some kinda mess where cheaters use other gamesaves and hack their profiles to unlock achievements they haven't earned. it looks like i can use part of their methods to have the acceptable version of my gamertag sign off on my MW2 save and can get back to playing.
of course probably by the time i figure all that out and get it working i could've more than likely just re-done what i had accomplished in spec ops and not be at risk of having my gamertag banned. oh well at least it's interesting to learn this method.

I know how ya feel, when i let 1 of my live profiles sit for 6 months and not use it, when i did finally most of my save where corrupt go figure, hopefully you don't have that many spec-ops to re- do, the tools out there for working with your saves are a bit risky...hope things go well

for future reference for anyone else, this didn't work for me. it already had my console id and gamertag sig on the save file. i ended up starting over on the spec ops stuff and it only took me a whole weekend to catch up to myself.
i'm thinking my hard drive has problems and maybe that's where the problem is coming from.
