Plugins. A lot of these so-called "improvements" lag it to shit. Just compare a new freshly installed version of firefox with one of those "improved" ones with tons of bloat added to it that some morons HAVE to have.

Why people blame Firefox when they install gazillion and a half of silly plugins they don't need "but it's nice to have"? At least disable what you don't use.

My firefox is fast enough. I stopped using Safari on my older machine, nothing would work with it. I couldn't use hotmail or f/b with it. Lots of forums I couldn't post in as well. Maybe it is better now?

Never had such problems with Safari. The only exception is the bug in gif decoding library introduced during one of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard updates - a few animated gifs with a lot of frames nearly freezes Safari. From what I gathered from WebKit forums, no such problem in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Despite that bug, Safari is my favorite browser that I use daily. Firefox is my second favorite, but I use it mostly for the WebDev stuff as it is not fully Mac OS X native app, feels like a second class citizen
On Windows PC, I use Firefox as my main browser cause Windows don't have system wide spellchecker.
On-topic: Never encountered Firefox "slow moments" neither on PC nor on Mac
