Here is a ramble for you..
I remember getting this game called Dungeon Master by FTL, I still play it on a emulator.
It still looks good, handdrawn 640*400 grfx, stereo sound effects, solid RPG system, very nice dungeon design... One of the few games where a dungeon actually FELT like it was working to stop you.
That game was made in 1986.. I still haven't played anything like it.
Sure, grfx, got better, Eye of the Beholder series, sounds got better, FPS action got better, Battlefield.. but god damn, something hasn't been recreated still.
A living, breathing game, where the computer doesn't cheat, the UI is easy and simple, but yet produces alot of different things, a f'ing nice and fast inventory system and a completely seamless class system... Wanna level a warrior? Swing a sword. A mage? Throw a fireball.. Priest? Make a healing potion.. but, still, wanna mix it up? Do all of it!!
Wan't to make people sweat? Have ghosts hunt them whilst a thief steal their weapons.
Make a puzzle? How about not mentioning it, and toss in a illusionary wall.
Seriously, wanna make a bungle? Make a dungeon master clone with nifty new grfx and l33t 7.1 sounds for the brats, it will be a hit.
NOTHING like Dungeon Master or Chaos Strikes Back has been made since, NOTHING. And it's been like what, 22 years?
C'mon.
Want to try it out for yourself? at http://dmweb.free.fr/ you can find versions for mosts OS's.
But really, wtf has happened since? Yeah, we got System Shock 1,2, and recently BioSchock, which still sucked.
Wtf.
