I have a nice thing going on with my retrogaming rig, but I want to backup the main drive in case something went wrong (very old hardware and OS indeed). So I tried windows' own but obviously it can't create a backup image of the main drive in another drive because of the filesize limit (4GB) of FAT32 and the drive I want to backup is a 80% full 40GB HDD. It doesn't have any splitting options either.

So any suggestions of a backup program that works on 98SE and have the ability to split the backup file into numerous 4GB files? Norton ghost? Acronis true image? I'm fairly sure these don't run on 98SE...

Most of the ghosting programs allow you to make a bootable DVD/CD disk and use that for ghosting, so it doesn't matter if you have a Windows 98 on it or Windows 7. Smile

Yeah but most of them also don't support Win98. I gave up anyway. Gonna hook the HDD to my main PC using an IDE to USB adapter and copy everything over...

If you're going through the trouble of hooking up the ide 2 usb cable, why not just open up your main PC and attach it to an IDE connector on your main PC? (Assuming you have one). It'll be ALOT faster that way with the data transfer. Another way is to run an ethernet cable from your win98 machine to your main PC and transfer it that way. (Prob around the same speed as your ide to usb, but you shouldn't have to open up either PC.) For my mame machines that i build, i usually have the roms backed up on a external HD and on dvd's (about 10 of them or so). I never back up anything else since if it ever crashed, I would probably install a clean windows version anyway.

That's a good idea but what about the boot sector and MFT?
