|
 |
Hey guys!
I am looking to assemble a new PC. My challenge: my limited budget of about 400-500 Euros.
I want to use the PC for gaming (recently released games) and fluidly working on CS4.
Any hardware suggestions other than spending more money, which is not an option at this point.
feedback welcome,
kecksta

Spinpoints are the devil. Had one for 1 week. Tons of read/write errors. RMA'ed it. Samsung Spinpoints are trash.

Funny, I've got two of them - had them over a year, no issues here. Super fast read/write speeds no other non-SSD/SAS drive can even dream of.

My 500GB Samsung drive that is 11 months old has degraded from being slightly faster than my 4 year old 320GB Western Digital one to being substantially slower.
The WD drive has access times around 14ms, can't remember the throughput (not at home right now so I can't test it). The Samsung started out around 12ms and with over 40 MB/s more throughput to being 20 MB/s slower now with access times of 20 ms :/
So no, I wouldn't recommend Samsung either.

Oh and on topic:
2nd option! That`s a fine setup!
Maybe swap the shuriken for a MugenII - the better choice.
Well and GPU - better go for 5850 if you have the money, or buy a cheap 4870 (1gb maybe) It`s cheaper and much faster. Even the 4850 is faster.
Edit:
may I ask where you are living right now?

Yeah, check Tom's Hardware test for 5770, 4870 kicked 5770 ass... and the price range is pretty much the same...

I'm with everyone else; don't get the 57xx card. Sure it's DX11, but it performs noticeably slower than the 4870, which can be had for around the same price, if not cheaper.

they were saying the 57xx are better for HTPC's if anything
funny thing about these new DirectX's is they put it on some lowerend card and say OOOO DX 10!! OOOO DX11!!!
ya...well...those two are pretty gfx and expect em to run better? like buying an 8600GT for DX10...ha!

That's the sad thing; a lot of people really DID go out and buy the 8600GT for DX10. Urgh, could you imagine playing a DX10 title on THAT?

great input guys, much appreciated!
Actually I was thinking to get all the hardware together in the next 2-3 weeks to come.
But after what you just said pwerelds, I think I will wait a little longer. One week more or less doesn't really matter...I just want the machine up and running by mid/end december.

Hahhahah. Sure. Right now I am back in my cellar in Austr(al)ia. Used to live in Tokyo before. But that's a whole different story.

While we don't have a final name for the card, it turns out that EVGA created a dual GPU card by combining GeForce GTS 250 with GeForce GTX 275
google siad that

I can't stress this enough and people still don't listen. IF your going to buy a bunch of new hardware, buy it all together at once. You start doing piece by piece and don't have "like" hardware, you won't be able to test any of it. If something is bad your not going to know till the last minute and are closer to your retailer warranty being out the window.

.... ok, that's fucking impressive. EVGA design for you ^_^ Why can't us Reds get some EVGA goodness?
Let's just see what the price is, I'll bet it's insane.

Maybe you SHOULD consider a defrag from time to time, you know?! a hd DOESN`T degrade over time... its not like it loses speed due to demagnetisation or some shit...
It always performs the same - no matter what... |
See, that's where YOU are uninformed. I do defrag once a month or so, and hard drives CAN in fact degrade. They're mechanical pieces of hardware, anything mechanic can wear or break. Defragmenting helps up to a point, but it doesn't prevent the actual mechanical parts wearing or breaking because they're shit.
Mine might just have been a bad piece, but instead of calling me an uninformed prick straight away, maybe you should take a look on the inside of a hard drive at some point. Next thing you're gonna tell me optical drives can't wear or break either.
Mind you, I do tax my system pretty heavily, as gaming is only a minor element of what I use it for, but that shouldn't affect it much really. If you want, I'll show you some benchmarks of both my drives, so you can compare them to their factory specs. Haven't benchmarked it since I switched the two drives, but I doubt it'll have improved. Even a simple utility like Speedfan reports that the Samsung drive (HD502IJ for the record, which is a Spinpoint F1) is not as fit as the WD drive.
On topic: I'd also recommend buying everything in one go so you can assemble it and test straight away.
As for the EVGA/NVIDIA announcement, it was posted on Bit-tech a few days ago I think; the Dutchies amongst us can find it on the GoT forum as well in the NVIDIA news thread.
Not sure it'll be as impressive as it sounds, unless it's gonna be cheap as hell, but at least it'll drop some prices again hopefully

It's the first time I hear about this kind of degradation on a hard disk. I mean, drop to half its speed ? And still work fine ?
More probably it's a modified BIOS setting or some SATA controller incompatibility that creeped up in some point or some other software problem.

Dude - srsly. You shouldn`t talk up like that when you are totally clueless.
The only "degradation" that happens to a harddisk has it`s roots in S.M.A.R.T./internal hdd error correction.
We are talking about a loss of speed, that would be hardly noticable.
The "degradation" you are talking about has another reason.
And optical drives - that`s a different story. You cant compare these.
It´s like comparing a Porsche with a carriage.
If one horse dies it doesn`t mean the thing won`t move - but if the motor or gearbox or clutch breaks - the car won`t move at all.
oh - and sorry for the "prick"
