|
 |
Been having very weird issues - I used driver cleaner to wipe my previous 8800GT drivers then shut down the PC and swapped the 8800 for the 5850 booted up and installed the latest drivers off the web site everything seemed fine - of course I was curious how bad company 2 ran in dx11 mode, and it runs fine - so then I try an old game, BF2 - the game locks up when I get to the point where you select your kit. I tried again and the screen goes black. I try again and get a BSOD, pointing to the file "atimdag.sys" so then my suspensions are somewhat graved in wood - you would think stone but I can't claim I don't have other problems at the moment which all cropped up soon after I over clocked this 5850, I'm pretty sure that's when all the problems started at least...
I'm reading reviews and people are saying that drivers from the amd/ati website resolving all their problems, and then I read everywhere that overclocking these cards is encouraged, so I'm asking what all of you think is going on here...
I got it from newegg, and I am planning on printing the RMA in an hour from now and sending it back via usps sometime before noon today, so advice asap please...

On a note about the new cards etc,
I make it a personal thing to never buy first or even "newly" released 2nd generation card release
Ive always been safe with that rule of thumb...

He's probably on his iPod.
Either that, or a smaller sig will make his card not GSOD.

Overclocking the gfx card is a last ditch attempt to gain performance, I'd never overclock a new card. Shit, I don't even overclock my c2d e8400, lol. Yet.
Anyway, sounds like shitty driver crap as usual for ATI, maybe reformat and start over clean ?

Yeah just did that and no change at all - stuck my 8800GT back in and the only problem I have at the moment is not being able to get my ipod to sync up with itunes, not sure why because I didn't have this problem prior to installing ATI...

It's not the driver, at least not on its own. What Ci fails to mention is that he has had a truckload full of weird issues, which are definitely not caused by one driver malfunctioning.
- Series of reboots
- DVDROM driver went missing
- X-Fi driver went missing
Further, his issues are not occurring in every game. I'm still not convinced that it's not your motherboard or PSU, really. Like you said, it happened after overclocking? Could mean the card is drawing too much power now, or that it's running at clockspeeds which aren't actually working.
Have you actually tried forcing the clock speeds + voltage back to default with MSI AB? Don't rely on CCC for that, because Overdrive is horrible.
When you get your replacement, instead of overclocking it straight away, lock the 2D and 3D profiles first with MSI AB. I've said it lots of times, but powerplay is still the main culprit for any issues with the HD5xxx's. It's not actually the driver, it's in the shit BIOS that's on the card.
Your stock 3D settings are 725 core, 1000 memory, at 1.087v (or 1087 mV in MSI AB). For 2D, you can drop that voltage to like 900 mV easily, with 300/600 as clocks.
Edit:

That's the whole point about the HD5xxx's though, it is virtually impossible to fry them. MSI Afterburner allows a maximum core voltage of 1.35; the chips can handle up to something like 1.5.
Furthermore, if your memory is clocked too high and won't go stable, it'll downclock automatically and cause a driver reset, not a BSOD - that is thanks to the ECC in the GDDR5 on the card. If the core is clocked too high, that might cause a BSOD. Then again, clocking it too high having it consume too much power through the PCI-E slot can also cause a BSOD.
Like I said, with the variety of issues he's been having, it is very unlikely that it's actually the driver, it's more likely to be too much power consumption or a core that's been clocked too high.
What were the clocks after autotune Ci?

Well like I mentioned earlier I couldn't get my ipod to sync, well it just did not too long ago - also there is 3.1.2 available so I have yet to update to that but when I try it says my ipod has been disconnected somewhere halfway through the update, and my cable that connects to the ipod side has a bit of wire damage coming off of the connector itself, could be a good sign of a short. Which would be the cause of that.
As pwerelds has mentioned I have failed to mention a number of things, I try to mention as much as I can when I have limited time - so if anything else I can think of comes up I will...
Paul you fail to remember I told you that MSI AB was not working properly at all I would set the clock speeds and hit the apply or save or whatever it was and it simply did not update the clock speeds. I even checked in multiple sources like GPU-Z all clock speeds never changed while using MSI AB...

That might have been because Overdrive was overruling it though. And enabling the "Unofficial Overclocking" setting tells MSI AB to pretty much override everything else, although ATT somehow still overrides MSI AB. Which is why I don't use ATT at all

Yeah well I tried clicking the lock again to disable overdrive but was unable to do so, it's almost as if nvidia is the apple and ati is the pc and I'm just too dumb to use ati anymore...

Just restore the overdrive default by unticking "Enable ATI Overdrive", right below the lock icon

I already sent the card back aswell so I'll just have to wait until I get my new card then I'm going to have someone write me out some directions and I'm going to follow it verbatim - and when it don't work right I'm going to blame it on ATI - because as of right now I have no issues with my computer, I even fixed the problem I was having with the ipod which was in no way related to drivers or hardware already installed on my pc...

I did not say this earlier...I am really happy........In my new pc on socket 1156
( i5 + ati 5850 ) there no FREEZING on games like on yearlier Socket 775.
And no problems with Gigabyte 5850. Tested alot of games. No crashes , no artifacts....
Tested for example Dirt 2 , 6 hours + a day
