|
 |
So, my old 8800GTS 320 finally broke down, it has served me well for over 2 years, especially considering that the earlier models got a reputation for being failure prone. So, I ordered one of those dirt cheap XFX Radeon 4770 for replacement, which is gonna bring me a moderate performance increase while probably lowering temps, noise and power consumption.
The caveat is that my old 8800 totally broke. While the computer starts ok, seemingly posting fine, there is no image at all, though I managed to once get a badly artifacted BIOS startup screen after resetting CMOS, that didn't happen again, so I've decided to leave it alone just in case something could damage other components. But anyway, my question is, how would I go about installing the new card? I can't really get access to windows to uninstall the old driver properly, and I'm unsure if I have the settings to mess with such stuff over my LAN. Would it be enough to just boot in safemode after installing the new card that's on its way and install/uninstall drivers from there? If not, could I do some magic thing with files and registry from an USB startup stick or something? Preferably I'd rather not reinstall windoze. I actually never done this thing without being able to uninstall drivers, so help would be appreciated.

well, you could just boot up normally
there should be no problems with having the old drivers installed
you should uninstall them ofcourse but the OS should function
atleast safemode will, as it won't use the driver anyway

I had a 8800gt that broke down, changed that to an ATI Radeon 4770 also. The card is faster than your old 8800gts card.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys, got the new 4770 up and running, and it's working beautiful. Arma 2 is quite a bit smoother for sure, and Risen is butter smooth with everything at max now.
