So its time for an upgrade! I'm not looking to do a full rebuild as I dont really have the cash at the moment, plus I just had a drive die on me so I could do with 2x 1TB drives.. Was thinking about 4Gb of RAM and a new GFX card? I'm running with 2x24" @ 1920x1200 so games are starting to run sloooowww..

Current Build:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping - OEM
Antec P190 Performance Series
Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP
OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC 4GB Edition
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB

Thoughts?

Think the issue is that due to the resolution I run at the 8800 just can't seem to keep up. I'm playing Champions Online and I'm only getting 20FPS average.. that's madness.. Granted, its not really optimised yet but still.

Plus I have some spare cash which I wont have after I buy my house.. so yeah.. small upgrade now Razz

dont worry about Champions online, im seeing everywhere in games with chat, that majority are seeing low fps lol.,.. so its not ur hardware for sure..

8800 series is now seeing its age with gaming for sure, your looking at a 260 or higher or 4850 + card wise id say..

I just got a gtx275 for €190 (germany) that's nice enough powerwise, but you should have a psu that's up to the job.

The rest of your rig is still fine i would say. Personally, i'm waiting for the i5 stuff to come out from intel, then i'll probably jump on the ddr3 bandwagon Smile

I've got a dual PSU system with 1200w in total so power wont be an issue. I was looking at the gtx295's and they seem to be within my price range (just Razz).. I'd like to spend a tad less but if they're worth the extra then I dont mind paying.

I've heard great things about the recent ATI cards? Anyone have any thoughts?

Also, what about cross fire? My motherboard doesn't support SLI but it does support crossfire, still the second PCI-E slot only has 4 lanes, will this make a big difference? If so could I put my old GFX card into this slot to expand the number of monitors I can use (thinking I may buy another 24" in the near future..)?

Yep, the 4870 and 4890 (and of course 4870X2) will give you great performance, and practically future-proof for at least 2 years (except DX11, but who know if that will pick up). I have 4870X2 (which sits on one PCIe) and I run all games on 1920x1200 on max. Syco is also happy with it. Smile

As for the rest of the system, unless you do heavy tasking with the CPU (like video encoding, image processing, etc), your system is more than enough. Smile

If you can, then wait for a month and see how the dx11 cards that will get released in september, performs. If not, get either the 295 GTX or 4870X2.
Of course this recommendation assumes you're using Windows 7, as I experienced some issues with the 295 GTX running in sli on Vista, I didn't get the same problems on W7.
I've only tested the 4870X2 on Vista, but it performed really well in gamebryo engines there.

Well it looks like the 4870X2 is the way to go! I'll order one this week and then plan my machine re-install.. still running the windows 7 beta on the main machine, need to get the retail version onto it ASAP. Sorted the laptop out with it last night Very Happy!

Still wondering if I can stick the old 8800 into my x4 PCI-E slot and have it work?

Woo upgrade ordered! I went with,

OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Reaper HPC 4GB Edition
2x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ
XFX Radeon HD 4870X2

If your wondering why I went up to 8GB, I'll be running a load of VM's (part of the HABOT development Wink) soon so the extra ram will be used for them mainly. I spent a little bit more than I had wanted to but at least this way I wont need to upgrade for a little while..

Mmm.. just had a thought.. If I put the Nvidia card into my x4 slot could I not use it as a dedicated PPU?

EDIT

Quote:
Can I use an NVIDIA GPU as a PhysX processor and a non-NVIDIA GPU for regular display graphics?
No. There are multiple technical connections between PhysX processing and graphics that require tight collaboration between the two technologies. To deliver a good experience for users, NVIDIA PhysX technology has been fully verified and enabled using only NVIDIA GPUs for graphics.

"Read: We've locked PhysX from working if we detect a non-nVidia card in the machine"

Fucking nVidia scum.

See, you try to play by their rules. You go and buy one of their cards, but no.. that's just not good enough. Not for those fuckers. No, they want nVidia and *only* nVidia in your machine. *sigh*

Still, forget PhysX mate -- you've got a 4870X2 now! The single most powerful, consumer, graphics card around. Should keep you going for quite some time Very Happy

Yes, forget PhysX, lol.

But next time, don't forget to buy Nvidia, the way it's meant to be played !!! Hehehe !

You really shouldn't buy based on physx, opencl is the future and AMD codeveloped that with Apple, but it's compatible with both Nvidia, AMD and Intel solutions.
Physx won't ever be anything but an interesting gimmick.

Ok, so there isnt a single 4870X2 in the UK at the moment, most shops are claiming there is no lead known date for more coming in.. so.. What do I get? 295?

If you can afford/justify it - yeup. The GTX-295 and the 4870X2 make everything else look like Intel integrated pieces of shit Very Happy I think it's fair to say that with either of those cards; there isn't a game you can't run maxxed (yes, even Wanksis)

Mmm.. I don't know much about XF .. Does anyone know if the following board would be fine with 2x HD4890?

- ASUS P5K Premium

It says it supports XF but as it only has 1 fast PCI-E slot I'm dubious? Looks like two of those cards beats a 295 and is 50£ cheaper..

I strongly doubt it. I'm running the P5K-PRO and in Crossfire mode, it only works out to 8x/4x. I would NOT recommend running a high-end card like the 4890 in 4x mode Sad

That's what I figured, guess its going to have to be the 295 then! I hear the 4780 is now out of production? Madness.. its one of the best cards on the market, how can they just stop making it?!

Do you want a logical explanation or a paranoid one?

Paranoid? nVidia scared retailers out of stocking it (places like OCUK are predominantly nVidia now)

Logical? ATi are gearing up for a DX11 sandwich GPU (5870X2/5890X2?) and want the 4870X2 out of the picture in order to promote sales when their DX11 cards drop later this year.

=Edit=

£266!? I can't even begin to express how shocked I am at that price... god, it wasn't even a month ago when they were still in the mid-high £300s.
