how the fuck can you read 300 worth of pages for a story you could have watched in few hours?
maybe I just have an extremely short attention span and no time to relax and read books, I know the wisdom and all the ideas in the book could never be interpreted in a movie but damn that's a lot of pages

Ask the guys on here who read books all day and in turn spout a bunch of crap they gathered from the book reworded to sound intelligent.

going by the same logic, why watch a 2 hour movie, when you can read its story on the net, in 5 minutes ?

Why read the synopsis online in 5 minutes, when you can have someone tell you the ending in 10 seconds!?

Razz

Personally, I read books - and prefer books over their movie counterparts - because I have an active imagination, a relatively long attention span, and enjoy getting the "full" story; which is something that is missing from movies, more often than not.

Usually books have more details than their movie versions, thus is if you watched a great movie without reading the book, chances are that you missed many cool parts.

Recently I've read the book "Trainspotting" and no matter how great the movie was, it covered only 1/4 of the story, when the other 3/4 are just as awesome.

Even worse is that a lot of "book to movie" conversions radically alter the storyline and plot too, usually because - as you say - they had to cut so much out in order to fit into 90-120mins of video.

If you cut out a character, you need to remove all the story surrounding that character. By doing that, oftentimes that makes the main plot more confusing - so script writers tweak and edit the original so that it fits.

I say "tweak and edit" but what I really mean is "butcher beyond logical recognition" >:[

So you want 6 hour movies or maybe no movies made from books at all?

Interesting. How did you come to THAT conclusion, good sir?

I never said anything of the kind. I was merely explaining why I prefer reading certain books over watching certain movies. I don't like my stories to be butchered, thanks.

I personally find books more interesting as usually they go into more depth.
I like reading. Some people like to read, some don't. No biggie either way.

And sometimes the movies are better than the books (thats a rarity tho).

that's right but why do we have to explain ourselves?
Some read, some don't. Some read more, some read less.
I read not as much as I'd like to but that's because I just don't have the time anymore.

(btw. whoever recommended Dan Simmons' books, thanks. Reading Endymion right now awesome! Although I should have started with Hyperion, well, whatever Very Happy)

@Sabin

I've read the Bible 5 times. From page 1 to the very end. 4 of those times I kinda had to. The 5th time was for fun Smile

Urgh... the Book of the Damned© Sad My useless stain on humanity that is my father happens to be a Jehovah's Witness, damn him to hell and back, and he used to preach that bullshit to me every single day.

I tend to stay clear of anything to do with religion, especially that hideously long book of absolute fiction.

^ that and there's a lot more detail in books. let's take, for example, hitchhiker's guide.
the book: i laughed 'til i cried. i was in tears for almost the whole time i had that in my hand. there's a ton of side-tracking, descriptions, dialogue, all amazingly funny.

the movie: a mediocre comedy that made me smile a couple of times. and this wasn't JUST because it was suckier. it was also because it's impossible to put not all, not even most, but not even a small part of all the laugh-out-loud details from the book in the movie. the movie has to tell a story which needs to be stripped down to it's bones to fit in those 2 hours. stripping it down to it's bones means you leave all the meat aside. and meat is what makes a meal worth eating, not bones.

unfortunately bad example, as the books came after the original BBC radio play, which I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than the books.

the film wasn't worth the skid marks in my pants.

You're welcome. Wink

Although you really should have started with the Hyperion saga, not only because the Endymion saga is the sequel, but because the books are better overall.

It's going to be interesting to see how the film turns out. Smile

I see what you're saying, FireMaster. But what you don't get is that when reading a book, your imagination almost plays the images/story, visually in your head and it really is a great experience. Try reading something!

Only reason I started with Endymion is because my father had those two books Very Happy
Found them rather randomly in his bookshelf, thought about your recommendation and just started reading.
Right now I'm halfway through the first one but I already bought myself the Hyperion books Very Happy
Maybe I'll stop halfway through, read the Hyperion books and resume the Endymion ones. Well, something like that Laughing

One of my favorite book is Tom CLancy Rainbow Six. I dont undertsand why they never made the movie, the game is a total hit since 1997 and the book would make one great movie.
