Hello,

This is really a continuation of a thread that got destroyed in the site crash awhile back.

If any of you are inclined to try indie games, we could sure use some feedback on the demo of a RTS game we just released called "I of the Enemy". It is totally a budget title (with 2D graphics) that we are trying to self publish, so don't go looking for Warcraft III visuals as that's way out of our budget range. But we think we have some pretty decent gameplay and that IOE might be a pretty good deal for the money.

The demo is pretty big at 140MB, but then the full game is also pretty big (barely fits on one CD) as we've tried to make it as detailed as possible. You can get the demo from our website at www.enemytechnology.com.

So if you don't judge games by their graphics alone, we think you might enjoy this. In any case, we want to know if we have any business trying to develop games.

Thanks very much for your time!

I think it will be enough to try the demo, not the iso. It's somehow weird to download the game when you can communicate with the creator directly... feels kinda bad. I hope Mark makes enough sales of the game.

No, I don't want to get on anyone's case. And I don't think developers should be shy about exposing themselves to criticism. I'm surprised more don't since I don't see how else you can really get a feel for what people are thinking.

If you hate the game, then heck, I really need to know that. And if you don't, then I really need some help getting the word out because the big guys currently have a choke-hold on the industry. I think this is a bad thing because my experience has been that I have enjoyed just as many games from small unknown developers as I have from EA or the rest.

In fact, I started making games because I was tired of the same old "formula" game play. Granted, the big guys are dominating the graphics arms race, but I think they are VERY vulnerable on game play. And isn't that supposed to be the difference between games and movies?

Anyway, I really do need for people to play the demo, so if you spend your valuable time to do so, I think you have more than earned the right to say what you feel; good or bad!

Thanks,

I liked the game its quite fun, but maybe you need to focus a bit more on a more original genre? Maybe even make a completely new, original type of game, the RTS genre is so milked out...

Sorry about that. The site should be back up now. We are moving it because (gratefully) we are being slammed with traffic.

As for the type of game, we struggled long and hard with this, and it is currently a hot topic of discussion among indies. What we finally concluded was that being REALLY innovative entails a substantial amount of risk because you are by definition building a game for which there may be no market. We felt we couldn't afford that risk for our first title bacause we only had enough money for one good shot at this. And if it didn't sell, we were done.

So we picked RTS mostly because it was our favorite type of game and also had an obvious (though possibly saturated) market. We tried to be innovative within this framework, and I think you'll find some substantial twists to the gameplay, and especially to the plot.

But above all, we had to LOVE building the game, because it takes a tremendous force of will to see a game through to completion. If you don't absolutely love doing it, the game will die the first time there is a choice between writing more code, and watching a football game!

Thanks,

If it turns out to be a small success, will you make something very original? Outdated graphics matter not, I still regurally play the old Worms games, their graphics are extremely bad, but they're very addicting.

Absolutely! We have what we feel is a very original design, but it's going to be expensive as it will all be 3D (among other things). So we have to do well with this to have any chance of working on it, because I am not going to write another game in my spare time!
