As I was walking home from work tonight, I saw a few deals going on at the local PC store, , an ASUS EAH4870 512MB for NZ$299.00 reduced from NZ$491.86 (US$195.09, reduced from US$321.04), so was wondering if this was cause the card was crap or if this was a great opportunity to upgrade my grandpa card as I can't really afford nvidia because of crap pay, and its almost xmas, also, Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB 32MB SATA for NZ$96.74 (US$63.17), good deals (in terms of hardware reliability) or keep saving?

No, the card is not crap They are getting cheaper because by the end of the year a new line of DX11 cards will be coming out, while the 4870 line is over a years old. It's great card, you should see a huge improvement over the 8800GT.

Hmm, OK then I'll put some serious consideration into dishing out some money for it, will look around first though, will be good for a chance since I've been having problems with nvidia's latest drivers.
Also would the hard drive be fine for a system hdd?

I suggest Samsung Spinpoint F1, they are faster and more reliable than the Caviars.

Awesome, thanks, and I'm glad I did a little looking round first as the 1GB is just as cheap, except PowerColor and XFX at NZ$320 (US$209) but I think I recall someone mentioning XFX aren't as good as they used to be? Would it still be a good investment to last something like 2 yrs? Dx11 can wait till the bugs are ironed out.

Both seem to be stock cards with only a sticker from the brand, so it doesn't matter, you'd get the same product, so go for the cheaper (or the one that would arrive faster if they both have the same price ).
And it's a good investment, especially with the console ports currently dominating the market. Look how long the 8800GT has been in service for you.

Hell yeah, my only regret is getting it on launch for US$326.10 only for it to drop to around US$228.27 in other shops soon after, ain't doing that again...but that WAS my first real worthwhile card, 7600GT was only tempo, since the 1GB don't seem to be on special I'll wait till payday, and console ports aren't that important to me, got a PS3 for that, only thing I never play on console unless exclusive is fps, don't really bother with strategy.

I'm not sure who, but it was something along those lines but it was Nvidia cards.
EDIT: put the 2 replies together.

Yeah was just about to mention, I can get 4890 for NZ$100 (US$65.21) more than the lowest priced 4870, but the XXX edition here is way too much
Its late so gonna sleep on it now, will hopefully get enough money on payday to pay for a 4890 if I'm lucky then put my 8800GT into a HTPC made of spare parts so I can watch anime and bd rips instead of just divx on PS3, hopefully mkv takes over avi soon, thanks heaps for all the input, didn't expect to get a good card for such a low price, specially here >.>

I think it's due to shipping costs, new zealand is pretty remote and I don't think they make GFX cards in there. it's the same case for other countries like that aswell.

Nope, neither support them, but that just shows how inferior they are. HTPC FTW!

So true, but give the console a keyboard+mouse and I would consider using it as my main gaming platform, less DRM hassle, Steam is fine, I use it for most/all my games now but TAGES, etc. Makes me regret buying Clear Sky for US$7, I'm never gonna install it cause of TAGES, even for the Steam version which is a bitch, oh well, theres other ways.
EDIT: Step One: Mouse

Yeah yeah, these console mice are really terrible, as what they do is emulate analog, and also games are not designed to use mice (you can see a proof of this with the shittier ports, which work terribad with PC mice). You could say "support a kb+m oficially" but in the age of "as simpler as possible, down to having a magic button that thinks for you", do you really think it will happen?
BTW, PS3 supports KB+M (through USB). How many games support them? 1 (UT3).

Yeah I've used my kb+m on my PS3 but it only works on the console OS, and UT3...oh right I remember hearing about that, that servers show if it supports em or not, and I know what you mean about the bad ports, worst I've played (atleast recently) is Ghostbusters, the game and concept are fine but the mouse controls are horrid, trying to move slow/sensitive is impossible.

Yeah, because shamefully they implement mouse to analog emulation. Sadly, this is what is only possible with current game designs, so imagine having to play all games with awful controls like in Ghostbusters. That's what will happen with that FragFX. You can see how bad it is in videos in YouTube.

Lol, some guy used a PS2 converter to use a PS/2 adapter on his PS3 and the mouse and keyboard worked fine on Resistance, saw it on a youtube vid.
Are the Samsung 500GB hdds only in 16MB cache form? Its all I can find, but doesn't mean a 32MB doesn't exist :3
EDIT: Lol, your prof says you joined on 1 Jan 1970, thats what Steam says my OS was installed on.
Yup 16MB the only 1, bit disappointed but oh well.

Last offtopic, and sorry for dp but browsing a local shops site, they have a Phenom II X2, are those any good at all? Of course better than my current but worth the price of US$129.75?

Yeah, Phenom II's I'm aware of but a dual core Phenom II, or should I just keep my money, cause this is apparently a "rare" product and it does have a pretty lowish price, but in terms of bang for buck I mean.

With a 3.2GHz dual core A64 you already own, do you really need a new CPU? Not really, if you are upgrading just for gaming, I think.

meh, depends on what your doing with it. I prob wouldn't get anymore more than a dual core for anything just cause I wouldn't need the extra cores, I rarely go outside of gaming/chatting with my computer so I need to worry more about gfx and shit

True, but its the 6400+ Black Edition that was pulled out for having a bug, so I was gonna replace it and just use it for the HTPC where the so-called bug won't be that much of a problem, plus it would overheat so much I have a Zalman 9700LED that blocks a RAM slot, but apart from that your right it works pretty much fine.
EDIT: Yeah guess I won't bother with a new CPU for now just get a cheaper 1 if I really want a HTPC, I have old RAM, mobo, and a GFX in a few days, and an old case but probably won't use that.

Got the gfx and hdd today, put them in, runs fine apart from that high pitched sound that won't go away but I'm assuming its just cause I have good hearing for high pitched sounds (I hear things my friends don't), but when I try to update the gfx drivers, when I get to the logon screen everything is black apart from the mouse, when I do ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+shift+esc the mouse goes into the loading cursor but nothing after that, oh and this is on Windows 7 64bit, no drivers it runs fine apart from what I'm assuming is Microsoft graphics drivers but I doubt they will be that good seeming how in properties it says it has 16mb of ram on it, oh and I can't get my default resolution of 1440x900 :\
Oh, so far tried 9.6+7
EDIT: Nevermind, it was cause I usually plug both my monitor cables in, it came with both vga and dvi so when I first got it I plugged them both in just to be on the safe side, but taking 1 out made everything fine, would the vga with dvi adaptor be worse or the same as just plain dvi?
