I am getting tired of the IRC way of downloading. I have read about newsgroups and how easy/quick it is to get new files.

What do you guys recommend? I have read up about usenet, usenext...but not sure which one is good.

I don't want to spend a lot of $ since IRC is free. I also don't need to d/l a lot of gigs. Usually just games....other things IRC works fine.

Any recommendations?

I recommend the search function. Cool Face

Basically you should use astraweb as a service...
http://www.astraweb.com/

as for the program there are several...

Newsleecher
http://www.newsleecher.com/

Grabit
http://www.shemes.com/

SABnzbd
http://sabnzbd.org/

etc.

edited because I felt slightly bad Embarassed @Nittany, you should really use the search function because there are like 10+ topics on the subject with likely more information than you'll end up with here Smile

this is the entire point of usenet, to download hundreds of GB a month at maximum bandwidth without ratios or other bullshit Wink

Not sure...but I keep getting kicked by blackmarket. I guess they don't allow use of Klipper. Never knew...but got kicked anyway. Problem is blackmarket ususally has the most updated games.

That's why I need to look at newsgroups.

whatever the case is, downloading via IRC is pretty 1995ish no?

everything brand new is on usenet within days. 100s of GB a month for ~$15 USD. not a bad deal, and better than torrents/RS/everything else.

been using it for about 10 years now without complaints Smile

Well, I am just about ready to take the plunge.

One question: All I have to do is sign up with one of the newsgroup readers? Like Giganews? I don't have to d/l anything else?

Do you d/l just like a torrent program?

Before I spend the $, I want to make sure its worth it.

Is it easy to find the newest games? Is there a search engine like IRC?

actually yeah, you should try the 3 days for $3 @ usenetserver.com if you want to try it out first...

https://accounts.usenetserver.com/register/index.php?rate=29&lang=en

basically you need to

1) sign up for service
2) download a client (newsleecher, grabit, etc), these can open and download the contents of .nzb files
3) get nzb files which are basically like .torrent files

you can either use a pure search engine like http://binsearch.info/ or one of many indexing sites... http://www.google.ca/search?q=nzb+indexing

pretty much everything ever released to the internet is on usenet.

Now what? How does Grabit access the usernet servers? What do I have to do to set up?

sorry for the questions...but I can't figure this out

in grabit you should be able to right click on 'default server' in the left side navigation pane and select 'server properties'. the host name should be something like news.usenetserver.com and you can enter the login and password for your account.

then go to binsearch.info and search for something and it will create a .nzb file that will tell grabit what files you want (same as a .torrent tells utorrent what to do). in grabit preferences you can also tell it to extract and fix files automatically, and you should let it do this.

also google .nzb file and .nzb indexer, that should answer some more questions.

Thanks...finally got it working with newsleecher.

Last question: once I d/l all the files...do I just run winrar? Or do I need another program to combine all of the files together. They look like rars...but not sure.

Thanks

You could just unrar them but sometimes the files contain errors which is frustrating. Get a program called Quickpar. It can check the files for errors and determine if you need to download any par files to repair the rars. Ofcourse most programs like grabit and newsleecher already have the functionality of quickpar built in. They can even check downloaded rars for errors and if necessary get par files, repair and extract the rar files automatically.

@WaldoJ I think you can use it with a VM-type app no? I know some Linux people use it that way (WINE), so I bet you can do something similar on X.

absolutely nothing wrong with grabit imo.

it loads nzb files and repairs/extracts/deletes archives on its own and is freeware. not sure what else a newsreader can do unless you guys are getting blowjobs from yours Wink

Weird but true: I get the highest DL speed with Newsleecher. Grabti, Unzbin, etc. give me lower DL speeds.

I had that same issue with grabit, was only using 1/4 of my internet speed no matter what I did.

SABNZBD+ and either SabTab for Newzbin or nzbStatus for nzbmatrix.com - you click on a report and then it auto downloads, pars, extracts and tidies up the name.

Nothing better out there

Well, with Alt.Binz and Firefox set to Open .nzb-files, all I have to do, wether I use Newzbin or Nzbmatrix, is click download - it open up instantly in Alt.Binz, which then starts the download, repairs it if needed, then unrar it and delete the RAR's.

So I guess most of the clients can do the same things Smile
