So through my awesome skills of getting distracted, following links etc. I came upon something that profoundly confused me.
See, back in the good old days of SNES gaming, I was quite good at Street Fighter 2 (mainly becasue it was the only game we had for quite some time).
So the last couple of guys you fought were
Balrog
Vega
Sagat
and finally M. Bison, right?
So why the fuck were the names changed from the japanese version?
No, that's not right, they weren't changed, they were merely swapped.
So in the japanese version
Balrog was named M. Bison
Vega was Balrog
Sagat was still Sagat
and M. Bison was named Vega
wtf? seriously? I mean W T F? O.o
Capcom of America what kinda mess did you create with that?
I know, pretty useless rant but useless void after all *shrug*
oh, I just found out why (well, pretty much while writing this)
So the original japanese M. Bison (known to the rest of the world as Balrog) was kinda based off Mike Tyson (Mike Bison / Mike Tyson - yeah, I get it, not very clever though)
So capcom of america were afraid of getting their asses sued so they just did the whole switcheroo thing with the names.
But imo this way the names fit better than the original japanese combinations

to put it simply - no one in japan gives a fuck dude.
In japan, people fall out of windows on game shows and shit.

I've seen that vid. Yes, japanese seem to be crazy in general.
But why they decided to switch the names around instead of just renaming that one character is beyond me.
I believe Capcom was run by monkeys back then.
Then again, I'm not too sure they aren't running it anymore

Street Fighter hardcore don't even refer to them as Bison/Vega/Balrog. In tournament play they are called Dictator/Claw/Boxer universally across the globe to ensure consistency. I haven't heard Balrog as Balrog in a long time.

Boxer's name was changed to Balrog because of fear of legal liabilities.
Dictator's name was changed from Vega to M.Bison because Capcom USA felt the name "Vega" was not menacing enough.
Claw's name was then changed from Balrog to Vega.
