Hey guys,

I've got a 1tb western digital, had it for a few months now. Everything was working fine and now the drive isn't being detected by two of the three usb ports on my laptop. The weird thing is it works on the third one, even weirder is that the drive is only suppose to turn on once it is plugged into a USB port, and when I plug it into the two ports the drive doesnt work on...the drive still powers up.

The usb ports work fine, I've tried my mouse on them, and the drive works too. The only reason i need to use those two usb ports is because there on the left side of the laptop (perfect for the drive) and the third one being on the right side (perfect for the mouse)

my laptop is a xps1530 (dell) and the drive is a western digital mybook 1tb

so, any suggestions?

thanks in advance

Well, I know from my experience with external usb drives that not all usb ports are the same. You need to check to make sure they provide enough power, even if the drive seems to power up (measured in mA)

Check in your device manager.

hmm, okay - but the drive has been working with those ports since ive had it, I dont understand how suddenly yesterday it stopped working Sad

*edit*

its also worth pointing out that the drive is connected to a power outlet, but only turns on when connected to a usb port - basicially the drive has its own powersupply

It used to work ? What changed then ?

Try plugging it in, then go to Device Manager > Disk Management, maybe it's just not assigning a letter when using those ports (?)

yeah, basically since i've had the drive it has worked with the usb ports. I've changed nothing, it stopped working yesterday - the drive still turns on when plugged into the usb port (drive is only turned on once plugged into a usb port - usb acts as an on switch) but isnt detected by windows.

erm i dont see disk management in device manager

okay i tried the drive in the third usb port, it can barely maintain a connection - windows detects it, loses connection, maintains a connection, loses connection etc...ill try it on another system

ok, problem solved - the cable that connects the drive to the usb port was damaged, tried a different one and it works perfect now ..weird that the drive still powered up with the damaged cable ;/
