So whats with these XvidHD releases by NPW?

They offer 720p resolution, and they are half the size of the normal x264 releases, the video bitrate seems to be lower but I can't find any discernable differences between the two.

Can anyone please enlighten me ?

It's encoded using the Xvid codec instead of the x264. It's labeled HD because the reolution is higher than a 'normal' Xvid enncode. If you don't care about filesize, x264 will be better. If that matters, those Xvid BDrips might be a solution.

The only good thing going for these releases is size and speed, meaning you can run them on your grandma's P3. Other than that, quality is pretty awful, there is macroblocking, smearing, lack of color fidelity, etc.

Generally, I'd actually say no, hell no. Consider the bits per pixel of both releases. While in static scenes, you'd see a clear difference in favor of the "XvidHD" (what a silly title), in most motion scenes, you would really feel the lack of quality.
