I have a Xbox 360 and PS3 sat beside each other downstairs. the xbox via wireless will download at an excellent speed but the PS3 is total garbage!

I have tried two different routers linksys and now netgear both excellent on laptop and xbox but not the ps3, is there a problem with the ps3's internal wifi card?

It's taking the ps3 between 4-6 minutes to download a 34meg file ffs, on the interenet check it reports alll good and estimates 3 meg download which is terrible.

The signal strength on the ps3 is 80% so that shouldn't be an issue, i have 20 meg cable broadband and get 23-24 meg while downloading from yoosernet, so i know that's not the issue.

I can't seem to find an answer anywhere, please does anyone know what the hell is going on?

I have noticed recently that my downloads have been slow lately so it could be Sony's servers.

I like bum.

Ok thanks guys, at least it's not just me.

Could you do a internet test when you next turn on your ps3 and report your download speed the ps3 reports please?

So i guess the speed test is done on the PSN server, that would be why we are getting shit estimated speeds atm..

I know psn is free but the games we download are not, i'd rather pay a subscription like xblive and get a good service Evil or Very Mad

I'd rather it were free to be honest. I probably spend more time downloading games I've bought on STEAM and I wouldn't want to pay for the privilege of using STEAM just so I could buy games off STEAM - even when it throws a wobbly (which it does quite often). Same goes for PSN.

I've not had any problems downloading stuff on my PSP in the last week or so - but I've not used my PS3 online recently (except to play GTPSP on 'ad-hoc party' - ). You could try hooking it up with an ethernet cable to see whether it is anything to do with the wireless receiver or not.

...but PSN is not the fastest at the best of times. Are you new to PSN?

I am not knocking PSN, for a free service its fine, compaired to live though I find it crap

I've not turned on a PS3 in awhile but I originally used the wireless to download stuff. It was always rubbish and incredibly slow. Hard wiring (or in my case, homeplugs) proved to be a massive increase in speed.

Lots of peeps have issues with the wireless controller card in the PS3. Could relate to routers I guess but I'd always go for wired rather than wireless.

I tried using a lead (I only recently got my PS3) and found it the same.

that is interesting though, I will look into just using a wired connection as its next to my router and see if it makes a differnce on a long term basis.

Relatively new Ispep,i have only downloaded a handfull of demos and one game pixel junk shooter. a few games have updated, i played LBP today and it had to update which took forever with just small size files. a 34meg file took nearly 6 minutes which i thought was bad.

I cant hard wire as the modem is upstairs and too far away unfortunately. I'm starting to think it is the onboard wifi card that is at fault, but saying that the signal is 80% so maybe it is just PSN atm.

Not having checked it's probably just PSN, but you get used to it. Sometimes it can be fast, sometimes it can be painfully slow - most of the time it will be at a very lackadaisical pace.

For what it's worth I have an ethernet cable running the length from downstairs right the way upstairs to a desktop PC and it's much better than connecting wireless. Maybe some tech-heads will find fault with a cable that long, but it works so that's the main thing. The homeplugs Grimmy mentioned above are really good as well - plus most ISPs over here should give you a pair for free if you ask (say you have bad wireless reception or something and need them). I use them for the laptop in the house.

...and basically persevere with the PSN speeds since (assuming it's not PSN itself experiencing heavy server load as a result of the Christmas boon) they don't improve much with an ethernet connection. You'll also find it's best to download system updates through the PC (a) because it means you'll need to wait until they upload them onto the site, in which time you'll not be a guinea pig for any bugs they missed, and (b) because it's much faster.

heh,

same game for me when I first got the system, took about the same amount of time on thursday evening (GMT) via a wired connection, so its got to be PSN as my connection is 7mbit, and i presume yours is the same or faster.

I tried downloading the update via the playstation site and was only getting 30kbps (500 via other sources) so I am putting my money on psn being slow

Downloaded about 1.5GB if not more today (between several apps and games) and whilst it certainly wasn't flying I can't say I noticed it being particularly slow either. Just usual PSN speeds on my end. I do remember thinking it was slower than my PC when I first got my PS3 though - so I could just be used to it Question
