Dominions 3: The Awakening is a fantasy turn-based strategy game with a strategic planning phase and automated tactical combat. Dominions 3 is designed for multiplayer through PBEM, hotseat, or TCP/IP but also provides AI opponents for solo or cooperative play. The game provides both scenarios and randomized maps, though it does not include a campaign. |
In my opinion this is one of the best 4x strategy game ever created, bar none. It doesn't have tactical battles or fancy 3d graphics, but what it has it does exceedingly well.
From the tactical prepositioning and ordering of your units, to the creation of your demigod.
To the magical system. Even the randomization of maps and the community ensures almost unlimited gameplay of new histories and nations to try out.
No demigod is different either, so you can really customize to your hearts content.
The game is probably more like a digital boardgame as it has all the systems you'd expect in a proper rpg system, while at the same time managing to be an addictive strategy game.
checkout the Demo It comes with a nice tutorial pdf explaining all the intricacies of the game.

Yeah Dominions 3 is excellt.
Really complex and deep fantasy strategy, it kinda reminds me of Dwarf Fortress due to it's attention to detail. There's just so much to do and see in this game.
I'm not sure you can consider it an oldie though, it's only like 2 years old.
But anyway, I suggest everyone remotely interested in this check out the demo.
The game doesn't really look like much, but there's almost endless fun to be had with it thanks to it's own awesomeness + craploads of mods on their forums.

The wealth of variety in this game is amazing. Each race requires a different strategy and every time you play the randomness of the map ensures that you will have a highly different experience.
One time, it might be a walk in the park and the next time you will struggle for survival. Lot of things depend on who you are facing, what your tactics are against your enemy and obviously where you start and what your area is like.
The only real grief i have about the game is the lack of automation features.. so it gets a little tedious towards the endgame (or midgame on huge maps)
Other than that, it would be 100/100. Without those, its just 90/100. Still an awesome game tho.

Just started playing this jewel of a game. I have a couple of questions :
1. I've managed to siege a castle with a pretender god in it. I try to storm the castle, but I always get defeated. What kind of army is needed to kill pretender god?
2. Are there units that can see stealthy units or is there a spell that can detect stealthy units?
3. Is it possible to move units between provinces without a commander?
4. Is it possible to give waypoints to units or I have to tell every unit every turn where to go?
5. I started on land and have managed to capture a couple of water provinces. Why can't I build forts/castles and increase defenses in water provinces. When I was playing a water nation I was able to do that.
6. Should I build forts/castles in every province?

I know there is a topic in Let's Play! section, but I didn't want to post my questions there as I think this is a better place to ask them.

As for my questions, anyone wants to answer them, please? I managed to destroy 2 pretender gods by reducing their dominion to 0.
