My dad was recently looking through old photos back when my family lived in England (I wasn't born then so it was all new to me) and he brought up the idea of getting a scanner so the photos will be around for the grand children so was wondering if it would just be easier to go into the local store and ask for the cheapest one or if there was something to watch out for, as I haven't really bought stuff like it before, took a quick look at Wikipedia but didn't really bring anything to my attention like it did with printers, any help appreciated, and in this case not just from me.

is there any benefit to having a stand-alone scanner as opposed to an all-in-one?

Depends on the brand I think, we had some all in ones at work and they where pretty reliable. But iv heard about ppl saying the opposite about them.
