Hello,

I am trying to play Fallout 3. The game boots up just fine. I am using the 1.1.035 crack. I heard something about not needing the crack? Crack is for the launcher, so I just executed the fallout3.exe. When I start a new game it just dies on me. I haven't been able to start a new game. I am going to try the Catalyst 9.1 tonight to see if that helps. Any help is very much appreciated.

TIA!

Don't use the 1.1 patch at all. It breaks the game basically... it makes a 3 second VATS lag, it drastically decreases VATS hit chances, and makes the game less stable. Install it after you've beaten the game if you want to play operation anchorage.

Thanks, I will try it without the 1.1 patch. Smile

I find it hard to believe that the 1.1 patch has all these disadvantages. I didn't really play the 1.0 version, I just started a "serious" game so I don't know ...

Anyone else have an opinion on the patch ?

Running the 1.1 patch here and I have no issues whatsoever, mate. The patch is actually needed for a number of mods I'm running ... and I've had no probs as of yet.

@MD

In what way does it "just die" on you? CTD? Black screen? Error message?

Either way, the UK 1.1 patch has been reported to have major issues (most notably with disabling Live for some reason) so install the US 1.1 patch (you can overwrite)

I would also recommend blanking the install, reinstalling again and this time using the 1.1 US patch and NO crack whatsoever. You can load the game via launcher or main .exe.

The 1.1 patch DOES have several known critical issues and there's several problems that still aren't patched some which also doesn't have reliable workarounds.

Just search the official forums, unfortunately there's a lot of junk posts and there's no good compilation thread or similar.

EDIT: From what I remember.

That issue above is a known one and only has a few vague workarounds such as disabling invalidation in the INI and using default resources.

VATS lagging a bit when initializing.

VATS lowered hit percentage. (Several perks related to this also don't work properly.)

Other perks don't work properly. (Ninja for example.)

However the 1.1 patch is required for the DLC to work, it'll just bug out if you try without having it installed.

I just wanted to reply in case this helps other ASUS Xonar D2 users. I have been using the card without issue for almost a year. Recently Fallout 3 and Watchmen would lock/crash to desktop. Fallout 3 after I chose new game and then at the loading screen it would lock making me end task. Watchmen would error and crash to desktop during the game boot up. I wouldn't even get to the title screen. I did all the fixes Bethesda said except for a new audio driver. I even installed .NET 3.5 SP1. I found a new driver on ASUS' site that was released on 3/20/09 named 81764 Beta. I had tried other new drivers but received a BOSD on the last new driver. I installed this one and it fixed all my problems. I can now play Fallout 3 and let me tell you am I happy! Smile Started it today and it is unreal! Starting out as a baby, how cool! Birthday party and the Pipboy. I am so impressed and cannot wait to get into it, beat it and then install Operation Anchorage and The Pitt.

Hopefully this helps someone,

MD
