A friend at work has this card, and he can not use the slider in CCC to set the fan speed. The fan is working, but only at "a" speed, don't matter what he does 20% or 60% in CCC, the fan is still spinning at the same speed.

Any ideas?

Smart settings?
And the temps are like 30-40c so that is not the prob. He can see the fan% change in CCC but the fan is not responding to it.

But what is smart settings?

Its more like the fan is locked in 100%=very noisy. When he runs "Auto-Tune" the temps will slowly rise up, so there is no prob with the temp sensor etc. It's simply a case of the fan not responding to the fan control in CCC.

Cheers.

This might sound weird. But I just talked to my mate over MSN, and he says that he found that there are 2 versions of this card. One with a 3 pin fan plug and one with 2 pin fan plug. Apparently the 2 pin version don't have the fan control AT ALL!. I find it extremely hard to believe that ATI has done this. I have been searching for some evidence but so far nothing. He got this info from a Mod at ATI's forum.

my hd 4850 has the akasa vortexx coler with 3 bin fan connector running @ 2500rpm loud but keeps the temps really low.]

He has ordered a "Arctic Cooling Accelero twin turbo" so I guess his worries are over. That beast will run those 2 80mm with 7 or 12v directly from the PSU (one speed) but it will be cooler and quieter then the stock...100%.

But I still feel that he is peed all over by ATI, how the F do they dare to do a version that "don't have control over the fan" ? HOW THE F DARE THEY!...been watching to much Hells Kitchen (Gordon Ramsey for F sake) lately...SO PISS OFF! Wink.

ATI? Did ATI build the card? (ie. it's an OEM card?)

He should be peeved with the company that released his particular card since they're the ones putting cheap fans on the cards. The fan option doesn't work on my 4870 either but that's because I have a PowerColor PCS+ (custom cooler).

Yea its a reference built card from Club 3D. They basically just label it, the rest comes from ATI I guess.

You just click on the lock box)a square box with a lock in it Razz)
Open ccc, then go to ati overdrive.
Then follow what i said at the start.

@ captaincox.
Mine changes normally.
I remember when i couldn't change the fan speed due to using older ati drivers.
Make sure he is using the latest version.

He is using 9.2. And he checked that connector for the fan on the card, it only has 2 plugs. If you check some pic online of the 4850 all of them have 3. Anyway, he is bringing the card in to work cause he wants me to fit the new heatsink. Will have a good look at it then.

Just a headsup on my friends card. He finally installed the "Arctic Cooling Accelero twin turbo" using the 7v connected directly to the PSU (molex). And he was really really happy with the sound performance as well as the cooling. I guess one could say that the Accelero is highly recommended for the 4850.

That said I am really looking froward to get my "Accelero Xtreme 4870X2" some times mid March (should be out by then...I hope). I am expecting low noise and temps around the 30s-40s.

Yea i know, but I will do that on my next rig. Will probably buy a Silverstone TJ07 and just WC the CPU and GPU. I think that's feasible using one 3x120 rad and a one 2x120 rad. There is enough room in the TJ07 for the rads + a PSU in the lower compartment.

My case at the mo is just crammed full as it is, and I have promised myself a new case and with that a new build...so yea, next gen hardware it will be Wink.
