I guess some of you have read that my HD 4870x2 was overheating when playing GTA IV or as of late the ETW demo. Running a fan profile set to 65% the card still hit 100c and the automatic 100% throttle kicked in.
Of course I suspected that it was dust, and I had a can of compressed air, so I blew away, and sure there was some dust coming out alright.
Ok so back with the card and fired up ETW...took a tad longer, but the card still hit 100c WTF!
Started to think that maybe the contact of the heatsink and the GPU's was bad or something. Anyho, decided to check it out so I simply took the thing apart. Could not really say that the paste on the GPU's or the block was off or bad, but I cleaned it up and put some AS5 just to be sure. Slammed it all together and fired up ETW...
hm, the temps where sort a better...but after 5 min "WHIIIIIRRRRRR" fan kicks in 100% and yea 100c WTF WTF
Think GOD DAMMIT THINK!.
So, what could it be that causes the dam card to overheat...must be dust after all.
so I took the card out (now for the 4th time today) and dismounted the heatsink from the card (10 screws or what have you) and took the heatsink itself apart (another 10-12 little bastard screws).
BEHOLD! the whole hestsink (closest to the fan (there are 2 of these on the x2)was totally jammed full with compact black dust!. I guess it was to compact for the air to even nudge it.
Anyho thinking that I finally got it I quickly screwed the dam thing together and fired up the PC...RATTTATTATTATTAT! WTF!! WTF WTF!!!! is it now then!!!!!!
Guess what, i forgot to lead the cables for the fan out a little side slot, so the dam cable was hitting the dam fan!!!! NOOOOOOO! I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS AGAIN!!!!!.
Of course I did it and now the temps are as they should. I can play ETW with a fan setting of 50% and the card goes to max 75c or so.
But!...I will for sure buy this when it comes out end of March

I guess with this beast one would not even hear the fans when playing, and that is something I am pretty fed up with on the 4870x2.

i had exact the same thing going on with my 4850 lately...even with 100% fan speed, idle temp was 80-90°C, when playing a game it would hit 115+°C in a matter of minutes. didn't want to take it apart, so i more or less inserted the thin pipe of my compressed air can between the little metal ribs of the heatsink and blew through every one - out came a VERY small amount of dust, but that shit was compressed like i've never seen. yes, heatsinks clog up with dust, but in this case it was almost solid!
imho, i would almost call this a construction fault. heatsinks/coolers should be designed to run for years even in cases without dust filters, not everyone wants to take apart his hardware twice a year.

Yeah my 8800GT is starting to overheat really easy, as soon as I try play EVE comp shuts down, but the temperature here has gone up and is now 21-23 degrees Celsius at day, 20-22 at night so now I get almost no game time so was wondering if it would better to finally upgrade my GFX (will have to wait a few months :\) as its getting kinda old, might be wear and tear or bad design, its Leadtek, or just get some extra cooling, but my PSU is only 550W and don't have enough money for anything over NZ$100 as I just bought a new 32" LCD (Not huge but gets the job done, way way way better than SD).
P.S. Sorry for kinda stealing your thread but this way 2 birds 1 stone, and its 1 less thread.

bushwacka: what sort of 4850 do you have? Some models have "custom" coolers that are quite a bit more efficient than the stock coolers from ATI. Just wondering...

someone had the same issue as you did with their ati card & didn't know why their card was overheating so they ended up selling it on ebay really cheap.stock ati H/S is awful.this is why i have the akasa neo vortexx fitted on my hd4850 idle is 43c & full load mid 60's fan @ half speed,if i put it @ full speed idle drops down to 35c & full load mid to high 50's.
