I couldn't even begin to tell you the dates, but here's a rough outline of *proper* graphics cards that I've had since 1995. I had PCs before that, but the GPU was always onboard ultra-crappy stuff (hell, I've even had CGA/EGA PCs, hehe)
2MB SiS GPU ISA
2MB ATi Rage PCI
4MB 3DFX Voodoo1 accelerator PCI
4MB ATi Rage Pro AGP
16MB Elsa Gladiac MX AGP
16MB Riva TNT AGP
32MB Riva TNT2 AGP
64MB GeForce 2 GTS Jumbo AGP
64MB 3DFA Voodoo5 AGP
64MB GeForce 3 Ti500 AGP
64MB ATi Radeon 7000 AGP
64MB ATi Radeon 8500 AGP
54MB GeForce 4 MX 420 AGP
64MB GeForce 4 Ti4200 AGP
128MB GeForce FX 5200 AGP (oh dear god...)
128MB ATi Radeon 9500 nonPro AGP (flashed to Pro)
128MB ATi Radeon 9600 XT AGP
128MB ATi Radeon 9700 Pro AGP
128MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro AGP
256MB ATi Radeon 9800 SE AGP (eww compared to the Pro)
256MB ATi Radeon X800 Pro AGP
256MB GeForce 6600 nonGT AGP
256MB GeForce 6600 GT AGP
256MB GeForce 6800 GT AGP
256MB GeForce 7600GT PCI-E
512MB GeForce 7900GTO (two of them) PCI-E
512MB GeForce 8800GT PCI-E
512MB ATi Radeon 4850 PCI-E
That's in order, best as I can remember, right up to now.

Be wary of 8800GT's (or any G92-based card) since they're most likely built with the defective bump-material. I got rid of my 8800 after reading about the bump-gate scandal and saw the sudden rise in DOA RMA's. The heat-cycles will sooner or later break the bump-connection at which point the card will be dead. With heat-cycles I'm talking about when the card goes from Desktop to 3D-game to Desktop to reboot etc.. Laptops are much more susceptible to this problem since the power saving features in modern laptops basically switches the GPU on/off in a fairly constant rate which puts a lot of stress on the flawed bump-material.

It was nothing to do with the cooling, mate. It was an actual defect in the manufacturing process. A lot of G92s were recalled due to the issue and the first-run batches often died before the recall.

Yup, I fell for the store-owner bullshit too. I had the FX-5200 for a week before removing it in disgust and going back to my GF3-Ti500.
God, the entire FX range were appalling.

Why? The 4650 is a lot more powerful than the 7800GTX, bud. It has lower memory bandwidth, but the general power of the card is noticeably better.

Some of the young ones here Born into the golden age of graphic cards... Do you even know what software rendering is? Having no HT&L? I remember not being able to play Delta Force (the first one), because my card didn't have hardware T&L, while onboards in my high school had emulation for it...
