so i connected my mobo through receiver via coaxial, rear speakers sound come out of front
if i connect receiver with stand alone dvd player via coaxial i get dolby digital, not with pc however, i can only choose stereo or pro logic, if i try test in properties i get 5.1 so it must be media player
tried both mpc hc and kmp no dice
my setup gigabyte mobo ALC889A with latest drivers/software installed for ALC889A, speaker setup creative inspire 5.1 digital 5500

which filter/output settings should i use for mpc, tried chosing spdif but i get no sound

anyone?

What OS do you have? If it's 64bit, you will need 64bit versions of the players, or you won't get 5.1 audio. I helped Nouse with the exact same problem few months ago, so you should look for that thread. I gave him link that helped him. Smile

have you selected ac3/dts in internal filters?

have you selected to use a digital source in your creative drivers thingie, don't have creative myself, I use kx drivers so don't know how it works with creative drivers.

Hold on, you have an on board audio, that is, as far as I know, not capable of encoding on the fly to DD, only pass existing DD. That would mean the player will have to encode the audio to DD prior to sending it to the card. I'm not sure either MPCHC or KMP can do this on their own. FFDSHOW64 on the other hand can:

MPCHC can be configured to use external codecs, so I'd recommend trying that.

yes as leo said the solution is to use ffdshow tryouts for x64 ... (ac3filter when using x86 OS works as well) Smile

oh and it looks like that speaker system does have a built in DD decoder...

why do you need to use internal filters? just set it to use external ffdshow filter and you're set Smile

Mort, don't click on DTS pass-through, let FFDSHOW decode the DTS and reencode it to DD. Only tick AC3 (DD) pass-through. As far as I know, the Z5500 does not decode DTS.

You should set it like so:

5.1 analog is just for games...

ac3 and dts are for movies.

Uhm no, if you have a high-end card, it is possible to encode everything to DD (AC3) on the fly. Also, 5.1 analog can be used for any purpose, especially when dealing with PC speakers, where the difference between digital and analog is not really felt. Also, for 5.1 analog you need no special sound card, just an on-board. Smile

On high-end speakers it would sound better than from an analog input. Smile

Which may have more to do with shitty D/A converters in the amp than with the signals themselves.
