I just picked up a new VGA Cooler (ARCTIC COOLING ACCELS1 Rev 2) to try and cut down on temperatures and more importantly, fan noise on my Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850.

So I follow the instuctions and get everything set up, put the card back in and boot up and I get nothing.
Monitor doesn't recognize that it's plugged into a vid card.
I double check that the power cable is plugged into the card and reseat it and nothing.

So i'm convinced at this point that I have broken the card in the process of putting on the new heatsink and decide to put the stock heatsink on the card for one last try before I RMA it.

I plug it in and i'm back up and running.

I'm at a total loss here, it will work with the stock cooler but won't with the new one...

Anybody have any ideas on this?

There is video instructions I followed here if that will help shed any light.
I have just the heatsink not the extra fans.

no fan connected=no go Wink

iirc, no gfx card starts up if there is no fan connected, to avoid overheating.

of course this can be circumvented for watercooling or passive solutions like yours, but my advice would be to simply put a nice silent papst (or similar) fan on the heatsink. still (almost) zero noise, but also low temps - 4850s get quite hot, was reminded of that recently when mine (stock cooler) shot over the 115°C mark

I was thinking about adding the add-on fans but i wanted to see my temps without them first before i commit.

My case has 4x 120mm fans and 1x 200mm fan so i'm thinking I have enough airflow to cover me.

How do I get around the need for a fan on the heatsink to get it working?

I suspected the fan was the issue considering it's the only item missing from the original setup.

Edit: I've been reading up online and it doesn't seem like anybody had any issue with the fan not being connected and having it working.

It possible that it's something else all together?

maybe just maybe this particular maker placed some fail safety in bios itself, never heard before tho

don't understand really why most companies placing crappy mazefakin coolers which never do their job
so ppl have to bother themself by adding aftermarket ones
freakin incompetent if u ask me

same as if i bought a new car and had to replace radiator myself coz engine is overheating with the stock

I did a quick tour of the BIOS on my mobo and nothing there seemed to indicate any failsafe.
I got a feeling it's something more basic then that I have completely missed.

I'll try putting it back on again tomorrow to see if history repeats itself.

If anybody else has any other ideas please let me know.
I'll report back tomorrow either way.

OK I gave it another shot.

I put the Accelero back on and popped it in and still no go.
I wanted to rule out the possibility that it was a failsafe related to the fan on the GPU so I kept the accelero on but also plugged in the original heatsink and left it off to the side.
Fan on the original heatsink powered but still no display.
My mobo has a display and it showed "32" which is the same thing it showed on my previous attempts - no info on this in the mobo guide.

So it's not fan related so thatcan be ruled out.
I took a look at the connection between the accelero and gpu and thought perhaps they weren't flush and it was a temperature issue on bootup.
I titghened all the screws as much as I dare.

So I don't have a clue as to the fix, boots up without issue with stock, no display with Accelero.

I've included some pics of the setup.

Help please Sad
