Your OS is 64bit, so ... the 64bit version.

No.
There are two versions of WMP in 64bit Windows. By default the 32bit version runs because most codecs are 32bit. Same is true for Internet Explorer.
In order to switch to the 64bit version of WMP, run this:
Code: | %windir%\system32\unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:64 |
To resume to the 32bit version of WMP, run this:
Code: | %windir%\system32\unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:32 |

The better non-nazi player is KMPlayer. Has good interface too.

MPC Home Cinema or KMPlayer have all codecs built in
why would anyone use WMP anyway?
it's lame, slow and limited in options

What exactly are the options that are missing? WMP + FFDSHOW = all you ever need. And before you say some blabla about FFDSHOW, most of the standalone players use ffmpeg's libavcodec anyway, so it's the same thing.

You must've used a very old build. The latest build works oob as it should, no external libs required.

guess i need more than that
a lot of audio and video tweaks/options which are much more easier accessible unlike in wmp, switching between AR, bookmarks etc., list goes on
kmp has better visual and audio quality and u don't need to install any codecs filling up your system with xtra junk, besides files opening faster if codec is already built-in the player
i use winamp portable [so i don't have to install it every time i format] for music, couldn't care less about libraries and shit
same with kmp, i just create shortcut to desktop and keep reg file to recover any tweaks with double click

Only first-time computer users use media-library. One of the most irritating features of wmp was it was always searching for media files to place in my library. Just use folders/playlists!
I use kmp myself because you can use it on even a fresh windows install and not worry about dling this or that codec. Having said that, I do have codecs installed because otherwise it limits your encoding options.

I can't be bothered to browse through folders for my mp3s, I have many gigs. Are you guys demented ? Much less make playlists all the time for the stuff I download.
I start to write a song name in winamp and it instantly shows it. And it only scans when/where I want it to.
"First-time computer user !!" wth ?!

I remember that Amarok was really good when I was trying out linux. And I've heard they're trying to make it windows compatible (which, I dk why, sounds kinda silly to me ).

It's probably the codec pack. Unistall it completely, restart the PC and install FFDSHOW tryouts (either 32bit or 64bit, both work great, but 64bit is faster).

Maybe, just maybe this helps:
Does the new wmp use EVR as its Video Renderrer? If it does you may need to have Aero running so it wont tear.
