I just finished watching this movie and I have to say "DAMN!"...
It's dark, melancholic and evocative, and I've never seen a movie like it before. As a vampire movie it's bending the genre completely, making other modern vampire movies look like crap.
It's a Swedish movie, set during winter in the late 70'ies or early 80'ies, in a suburb to Stockholm. Oscar is an introvert 12-year old kid having a hard time in school, being the target of bullies in his class. He's got an interest in reading about murders and forensic investigations. Living in the suburb without any friends his life is lonely and empty, especially seeing as how his life is made miserable by the school bullies.
One night he watches a cab pull up to his house with a man and a girl. They're moving into the empty apartment next to his. In the following days an adolescent boy is murdered in a nearby area, strung up to a tree with throat cut to bleed him dry.
Oscar meets his new neighbor, a 12-year old girl named Eli. She only wears pants and a sweater but doesn't seem to be freezing. They become friends and meet outside during evenings. At the same time Eli has to struggle to survive. The man who helps her have trouble "harvesting" blood for her and she has to do something about it.
All this is building up a strong dark piece of a story, an eerie atmosphere combining friendship with gruesome events and tragic conclusions.
I wholeheartedly recommend this movie to anyone who are interested in a movie with a completely different pace, atmosphere and characters than any other movie I've seen in a long time. Since it's a Swedish movie there's a subbed version out (ripped by saphire). For those that can't let go of easy-to-consume hollywood fast-paced and predictable movies, or who have problems with subs will probably not get into this. For the rest of you, this is a must.
