Can't say I know that board, but just want to comment on the ASUS quality. I bought a Rampage Formula like back in February (most of you guys know it I guess) had 2 RMA's. I finally bought a new one as the last RMA took over 4 WEEKS!. So when I got the RMAed board back I sold it on EBay.

But in ASUS defence i can only say that if it works it works bloody well!
The board I bought when waiting for the RMAed one is just rock solid.

Ok had some probs lately, but that was RAM related and I can not really blame that on the board.

Anyho, my next board will for sure be a EVGA post x58 gen one.

ya evga only does intel Sad They have 1 board for AMD but it's only a micro ATX and I hate mirco's

Are there any other worthwhile boards? MSI and gigabyt is supposed to be good right?

Best AMD based mobo on the market atm, has the awesome SB750 southbridge too for excellent OCing, also a good deal cheaper than the ASUS board.

Yup gigabyte is the way to go.

I've always stuck with Gigabyte, never had any issues with their motherboards.

I always thought of ASUS as too overpriced... Never saw compelling reasons to get their stuff over Gigabyte for example, which have much lower price tags.

to be honest, the main reason I stick with asus is I love their motherboard layouts and the heatpipe system going around their MB's

Thats the one I got right now.

Looks like I'll try gigbyte now.

Is there any heatsinks like this zalman around that fit this socket?

I have the 120mm version of it and the air it pushes hits everything on my MB with ease. I don't like that figure 8 one that goes up in the air cause it doesn't really push air on the MB.

Yeah, exactly what I meant. I almost fell for Asus motherboards twice, and at both times came to my senses at the last minute. Wink

In heatsinks like the one you posted above, copper is better. Get the "all red" copper version. Wink

I had this for a long time and it was great:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

But I guess the one you posted above is also fine. Not as good as the one I recommend, but certainly not as big for case considerations.

SEe thats the one I got for my GF at the time but it doesn't really push air along the MB.

@stefan

Getting that one till the Phenom II X3 comes out.

not a bad choice, but you might consider going for a tripple core right away and stick with it.

Phenom 8750 x3 2.4 ghz black edition

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103295

Has an unlocked multiplier, i havent seen anyone who couldnt get to make it run at 3.0ghz by simply changing the multiplier, with your board which is the best atm for OCing im sure you could hit 3.2 ghz with a minor voltage increase.

Really debating if i should get one myself.

its really easy , you just go to the bios , set the multiplier from 12 to 14.5 or so and its 3.0ghz.

As far as ram goes , GSKILL never disappointed me

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166

EDIT : Does your gf play alot of games? if not the onboard video will do just fine.

If you want a good price / performance card that produces little heat and uses little power ( no external power needed so you can go cheap on the psu )

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127383

speedwise its just under the 8800gt, which will play 95% of current games just fine.

Sometimes you have to increase the voltage a bit to have a more steady and more stable OC experience.

this is for me! lol. I just mentioned my EX GF cause it was the last computer I built, which was a shit experience lol.

I have my eVGA 8800GT Superclock for a video card that I'm going to transfer over as well as all my HD's and my Razer soundcard (when I get it.)

I've never used G.Skill but I stick with what I know from experience. I tried overclocking my memory once cause I was bored and thought I had fried it, computer would post. Called kingston up, told them flat out it was 1 stick from a set of dual channel I won off of ebay and tried to overclock it.....told me to send it back to them and they'd replace it for free, was like holy hell. And OCZ I've just had a good experience with their memory in general.

But ya, this is my new build for me. My current system is:

Asus a8n-SLI Premium socket 939
amd X2 4400+ (best one for the socket)
OCZ Performance PC3200
evga 8800GT Super Clock
Sound Blaster Audigy ZS 2 Platnium (can't wait to get rid of this pile of junk for the razer card)

PSU if you hadnt selected one already

I'm using my 510watt (600peak) turbo from PC Power & Cooling. Only company I'll buy my PSU's from. 7 Year warranty, they actually rate their PSU's when their heated up and not turned off etc. They're built like tanks.

yup i got an OCZ 700watt, rock stable , although everyone says its really quiet, i had to rip out the fan out of mine and replace it with a zalman 12cm fan , drove me nuts .....

also dont forget to use artic silver thermal compound on everything.

As far as ram choice goes, i never used kingston before, but there arent any bad memory brands really, they make their own PCBs but there is only a handful of actual different memory chips going around on all of them.

So if their warranty is that painless i say its a no brainer going for kingston.

might have been a good day for me since it's actually not part of their warranty from what I know.

I think I'm going to stay with OCZ as stated in their warranty it includes overclocking and overvolting.

I can tell you stories of EVGA and their 680i board and the trouble I have had with that thing not to mention i bought an EVGA 8800 GTX graphics card and also had to RMA it 2x. I am going with Asus this time around with X58.
I think some times it has to do with the luck of the draw. I am sticking with EVGA with my graphics card... but not with the Mobo. The problems I had caused me to reinstall everything 5 times in 9 months. RMA it you say? Sure. I will. Soon as I build this next rig when i am on my vacation after Christmas. Didn't have time to take apart my computer because I make my living on it.
