How on earth can anyone work with this system? Nothing equals out, and how many square feet to a square mile?
My feet, your feet? Tea cups, coffe cups, mocca cups? Tablespoons for eating or serving? HOW THE HELL DO YOU COOK WITH THAT?
When the HECK is everyone going to figure out that its easier with a system dependant on 10'ths?
Even more fun if you want to try to figure out thread count on nuts and bolts, not only do they make no sense, but you have UNF and UNC.. try to calculate how many 10 feet of UNF correlates to as many threads in UNC..

1 mile = 5280 feet
So do the maths, it's quite simple. By the way, tradesmen prefer to work in imperial. It makes it easier to visualise.

Didn't we already have this one? Anyway, in a few years everybody will be using the metric system and those few who don't want to/cannot adapt will be extinct.

Miles, yards and feet (the entire imperial system) is very stupid IMO. Don't understand why England still uses such a primitive system. I remember there was a video on Youtube where fellow dumbees (you guess the country) were asked metric questions on purpose and they were so mind blown by this mysterious system!

Yes, but only in everyday use. Science is (mostly) base on the metric system.

We had this discussion like 3 months ago....and as i said, I dont know whats best in terms of applying one method to everything. But when it comes to trades, it is easier to work in the imperial system than the metric. any tradesman will tell you that

What's so good about it? If someone comes to me trying to sell me something and starts talking in feet, I'll show him a foot alright, as I kick his ass away!

Lulz @ Jenni. Someone close to you that is a salesman? Don't worry, I won't kick his/her ass, they are too far away from Israel. Nobody in countries I'd live in use imperial anyway.

I dont sell ppl stuff.
Trust me, if you were in trades, whether its metal or wood, you'd understand. Customers give their designs/orders to the guys in office which are in metric and they redue them in imperial because its far more faster to work in and it always tolerance.
The only time the metric system is used is if say your working on medical equipment or aerospace stuff where everything has to be dead on to the mm...but when it comes to every other type, production, structural, artists, auto etc its all done in the imperial system.
3 inches is far more easier to visualize than say 30cm....
But your a computer guy and the metric system works best for and for computers so I understand why you dont get it.
All Im saying is if you really wanted to understand, learn how to mig weld (would take you a month or less probably to get the basics down), learn how to read blue prints and work steel then try to make samething in metric and imperial...imperial is just far more practical
But when it comes to number related professions (like computer programming or what have you) the metric system is obviously supperior as its more exact.

sorry sycho, but the visualisation argument is bullshit. Because there is no fixed greater concept behind any metrics, but only the way you are brought up and are used to it. Its the experience that has engrained a sense of it into your brain. If you had used the metric system much more, you wouldnt have problems visualising it but rather problems with the imperial one.
but we had all those discussions alread in that other thread about metrics. There are reasons to update metrics from time to time and the only reason that people stick with the old ones is stubbornness and the unwilliingness to learn something new. It might be better in the short-run, but is fucked up in the long-run
edit: with greater concept i mean one that facilitates "better visualisation". And yes, there is a better concept behind the modern metric system and alot of other newer scales (see pressure for example)

I was brought up on both. I can visualise say what 3llbs of potatoes are or how many square yards of flooring I need to fit out my bedrooms.
It's easier for me to work out a mile rather than a kilometer. After all, all the speed limits are in MPH in the UK. Also I know that I'm 10 stone rather than so many kilo's.

I'd say base-2 is more similar to the imperial system than it is the metric system.
If computers were limited to a metric style system, we'd probably have to wait another few centuries before we could use them. So the best system is one where you're free to use whichever system works best, which is pretty much what we've got in England. That's one of the reasons why its still the greatest country on Earth (even if we do let others take the credit).

There's a better argument in the post above yours. i know because I wrote it, and its right in front of me.
And 30 centimeters is exactly a foot. I know that because I use both systems. That's the benefit of not limiting yourself to one system.
