I had one and had to re-start a few times in order to get it to work. It was a first for me. G5 Ver 10.4.11 . There was a huge buzzing as well, some fans went on.
I did do a re-start had to do it a few times in order for it to work but now it seems OK.
WTF is that?

If it was during startup, nearly immediately after power on, could be hardware problems, dying memory modules, motherboard or motherboard's battery etc.
If it was during work, could be kernel panic due bugs in applications or OS itself.
Or your Mac's PRAM could just got dirty Try reseting it
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
- Shut down the computer.
- Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
- Turn on the computer.
- Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
- Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
- Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Regarding battery, the best way to test whatever it is faulty or not is to
1) turn off time & date synchronisation @ System Preferences -> Date & Time panel
2) power off mac for the night
If time & date would become incorrect or there will be significant difference the battery need to be replaced.

Thanks WhiteBarbarian
Nope not during start up. I only had a browers open, sending a pm actually and nothing else going on. The timing was weird.
Everything seems to be working. I thought maybe 'kernal panic' ? I don't know what that is, I have to google more.

had that once. It sometimes (VERY rarely) happens when my macbook is in stand by and i hit space bar to awaken it. It just stays black screened til reboot. It must be a rare bug.
