1) try to repair and recover files that won't copy off the HD
2) throw the fucking thing off the balcony
advice?
got about 150 gb in mkvs that I can't copy over... a lot of them actually seem to play fine from the drive, some others freeze in spots.

I guess I should have mentioned, it is an external HD hooked up by USB... also it's a western digital drive inside a comstar case.

try pluggin the drive into your pc directly if you have a spare ide channel (im assuming its an ide drive) just in case the controller in the usb housing is faulty.

try get databack or something similar to recover the files, doubt you'll be able to get many back intact considering how many bad sectors there are. it'll probably die completely soon, i wouldnt put anything on it you want to keep.

"If your Product was purchased as a component integrated within a system by a system manufacturer, no limited warranty is provided by WD."
I wonder if that means that since it is actually 'comstar' product (enclosure + drive came as one unit) that it won't be covered by WD.
Once 'GetDataBack' has finished running I will crack it open and get the serial # off the drive.

with WD you don't need reciepts, they use SN's which are linked to a date etc

maybe I should also mention I dropped it over a year ago... |
Drop it again on the opposite side, so that the sectors are realigned.
