My router that i have right now sucks. I cant play any Steam games when im on it and i keep getting disconnected from Live so he's a fuckin pain in the ass. Give me some suggestion of good wired router. Dont need the lattest ones, even if its old but good, im up for it. Something i can maybe get for a cheap price on Ebay. Right now i have the Linksys BEFSR41.

I need sonthing that is plug and play without having to set everything up cause i dont know shit about networking.

Thanks

I'm using Linksys WRT54GL with a custom firmware by DD-WRT, and it's pretty much plug and play.

I got the GL one because it has more memory and runs on Linux, so you can put custom firmwares for it. I've read the Linksys UI was awful so I didn't even bother. I just installed the DD-WRT and was happy. Razz

SkypeZ, if you have an older model of the G, you can also put the DD-WRT firmware.

Linksys WRT54GL is the way to go.

For firmware I suggest http://fixppp.org/

It has a bad ass feature to get around torrent throttling, that is if your ISP throttles you like they do up North Crying or Very sad

I had a Dlink DI-604, pretty low cost, but worked with no problems for 2 years, almost constantly connected, then there was a power outage due to lightning and it died.

Now I'm using a linksys BEFSR41 and it's horrible. Disconnects from time to time and is then unable to reconnect for up to 12 hours sometimes for no obvious reason.
If I disconnect the router and connect directly then there's no problems, so it must be the router :/

the WRT54GL looks interesting, but it scares me that it looks almost the same as the BEFSR41. I sure hope it's more stable or something

I have a TRENDnet TEW-633GR that I got on sale for $ 50 its worth about $90. If you can find a similar sale like I did you'll be VERY happy. Its never given me a problem and I have 2 PC's and 1 wireless laptop connected to it. The wireless works so well no matter where my wife goes around the house or yard she always gets full signal strength and goes just as fast as me and my PC is right next to it wired!

Something to remember about the Linksys WRT54 routers is that they can only NAT about 30mbits maximum so if you're on a connection faster then 30mbits you're limiting your own internetspeed.

I'd say the D-Link DIR655 is pretty sweet. I know it's D-Link but it's stable and supports NAT up to 267mbits.

they are both. Theres 4 ports on back for hooking up cables so you have the option of both. The wireless can be disabled via the firmware

When you get a new router (at least with these wrt's) the wireless is disabled by default. You can enable it if you'd like.

Those people using wireless and having their net leeched deserve it. If your going to use wireless, you secure it, their idiots for not doing it. When running secured you'll need a 26 character key provided by your router to use it (windows will save it if you use it on a laptop or something).

Also check your modem, some modems like mine will come with wireless as well...but usually defaults to disabled.

But ya, all in all, if you don't want wireless, all you do is select disabled from a drop down menu.

Heres a screenshot of it. Where it says network mode: mixed, there will be an option "disabled"

Theres way too much of them as i dont know what i am really looking for cause its not labeled the same.

Also, about the settings, is there something i need to do to be fully compatible with Xbox Live and Steam since the previous router had some serious issues with those?
