I've decided to grab myself a new set of headphones as the ones I currently use (Sony MDR-V500) get pretty painful after a days worth of gaming.. They kind of sit ON my ears which I think is the problem. I'm looking for a good pair that sit over the ears, but I dont know a huge amount about headphones!

I dont mind spending up to around £120 if its worthwhile, I was looking at the Grado SR80 and Grando SR125 but read reviews saying they were very uncomfortable, which is the opposite of what I want.

Thoughts?

BTW isn't the Razor only a rebranded -with cosmetic changes- headset from Turtle Beach, you know just the same for 40 bucks ($79.9 vs $119.99 @newegg) more? Wink

I'm big on headphones, I can't deal with a cheap pair (or a pair with cheap gimics Wink).. I'm looking for a pair from the lower end of the audiophile category, thus why I initially looked at Grado. Its a shame they dont make headphones which are comfortable Razz

the barracuda headphones are certainly audiophile quality as they were to be used with the cm8788 chip, which is the most advanced audiochip. No X-Fi doesn't compare.
It's the chip thats in the Asus Xonar and Auzentech X-Meridian.

I was looking at the more expensive version of these but decided that 270£ was too much to spend on some headphones Razz.. Any personal experience with these ones?

No, but I'm planning on getting either those or the cheaper HD555. I'm not sure HD595 are that much worth it. I recommended them because that's what I get on every forum I ask.

Another issue you have to worry about is amplifiers... The mid-to-higher end of headphones will require amplifiers to sound well on a puny sound card. Razz

i did buy some when they first come (medusa and zalman), they did sound shit and no real 5.1 effects whatsoever

what i meant by physics perspective is you must have at least 4 ears and 4 flaps for each of them to work as a 4.1/5.1 headphones Razz

5.1 heapdhones have 3 speakers per flap, and they are like 0.5-1cm away from each other. now think when you put 5.1 table speakers that close; i bet you couldn't feel any surround Smile

it's just a marketing trick.

7.1 headphones:

quadrophonic (4.1):

Very Happy

in head-fi forums there was some funny experiment made back in the beginning of 80s where some dudes constructed a 4-set headphones (4 flaps) and tried to squeeze them on head around 2 ears; it failed ofc. i think nowadays 5.1 headphones are a better solution in any way Wink

I own the Sennheiser HD 270 headphones. Image

They didn't cost me that much, they sound really decent and best of all: they fit perfectly!

I grabbed a pair of HD595's today, tried on the Grado SR80's and found them comfortable but I imagined they would get bad after a few hours.. Wearing the HD595's now and they're pretty good Very Happy! Think I need to have a play with my sound settings thought to get the most out of them.

The Grados have better bass. But overall HD555/595 are better. Plus, I hate on the head strap. I much prefer the behind the head one.

I have the Icemat Siberia headphones and I love em, the only drawback is that they're not a real headset, they come with a terrific microphone but it's just a small clip-on and not actually integrated with the headphones. If i buy a new pair i will probably try the Razer ones though, they seem sweet Smile

EDIT: The thing i like best about them is that i find them very comfortable. They fully envelop the ears which is really nice. I don't play extended periods of time anymore but back when i played WOW i had no comfort-issues after an 8-hour raid-sitting Smile
