Are you going or plan to go SLI? If not I would highly advise against a Nvidia chipset. Intel chipsets not only preform better overall but also give better overclocking. Also there is NO point in buying such a expensive board you will see little to no performance increase in the end. Its not worth it.

i've got q6600 and p5k-e (wifi-ap)
got zero problems so far
just don't update your bios from windows.. bricked a board that way.. use the in-bios usb-stick method
had it for about a year now

the asus overvolts.
avoid.
get a p35 board. gigabyte, abit, msi.
to name a few good ones. which particular you buy depends on what gadgets you need.
the abit ip35s are worth a look. they are able to use speedstep and go down with voltage even when overclocked. not many boards do this. good for building a fast, silent pc.

I also have the P5K-E Wifi/Ap with a Q6600
despite what AwE says (and hes right) its an amazing board. Zero problems with it, and great for overclocking that processor. Make sure you get really good memory as well

I figured i should buy an SLI board, so that later when my 8800gt is too slow i can add another one. But i dont think that ill be getting another one any time soon. And i do want to overclock my cpu right away. Are the nvidia chipsets really that much worse then intel? Should i go for DDR3? I havent been following the hardware scene in like 2 years so i dont really know whats up.

OK, so im thinking about getting the Gigabyte EP35-DS3L. Do i even need ddr2 1066 memory or is 800mhz enough?

800mhz is enough, default Q6600 frequency is 266*9 = 2400Mhz, with your 800Mhz ram you can easily overclock to 400*8 = 3200Mhz. If you wanna go higher or have better timings you will take something else.
@ swingman
The P45 also add PCIe 2.0 lanes, have memory controller improvements, etc.

^^ That could be a reason to go for a P45 board if one wants to have maximum bandwidth available. But the truth is that current games are nowhere close to utilising the entire bandwidth available to them.

Even for the two games mentioned, performance at 16x is only marginally better than performance at 8x (which would be equivalent to 16x with pci-x 1.1). But I guess one man's 'marginal' is another man's 'like totally awesome, I need to get me that performance boost'.

Got the same bored and its fucking awful. If you look on the offical asus forums there are hundreds of similar complaints. They revolve around the IDE/SATA controller so if you plan on mixing SATA and IDE drives your going to run into issues. To help show the issues, my IDE dvd driver doesnt work at all, my SATA raid failed and I lost 500gb of data. To install Vista I had to firstly install windows XP and (which worked with the dvd drive) then install Vista within it.
Still, it does have great OC options and provides some great features.

On the topic of ASUS. I bought a Rampage Formula (X48) when it came out. The 1st board had fuked Ram controllers (or something, as channel 1a/1b was dead, I made a thread about it here somewhere).
Anyway that board has been RMA'ed and I am still waiting for a replacement board as the shop I bought it from sent it back to ASUS for testing (will sell it 1st thing when I get it back but).
Anyho...bought the same board from a local shop here in Frankfurt and it just kicks ASS!. It just does whatever I want it to really. OCing is a walk in the park (E8500@4GHz) rock solid and no other probs what so ever. But I will add this, ASUS seem to have some quality issues, and that is based on ppl posting on the official ASUS forums well as my experience (this board in particular).
Some boards just work and some simply are fuked, like in my case. Bottom line is...if it works... it does WORK to the max!.

Don't have any IDE devices so I probably won't ever know if I have that problem. |

p35 supports 45nm cpus - np. There won`t be a cpu for socket 775 that won`t run on p35.

Actually, thanks mostly to this thread and a bit of judicious net-browsing .. I'm going to be buying the "Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R" myself. Living in Norway puts the prices way out of my reach, BUT! I have a good friend in America who is willing to ship it over here .. and it would be HALF the cost, even including postage fees, than it would be to buy in-store here.

The PCIe 2 bandwidth will start to be relevant if you wanna Crossfire. Actually I have bought 3x Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R (for 3 office PCs) mostly for their TPM chip, direct availability and the negligible difference of price with 1 year older P35 mobos (like my home PC's Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R).
