Can anyone suggest a good 2.1 set of speakers? What should be looked at when purchasing speakers?

If You're going 2.1 then it means You are not going to listen to music on it, just want to shake your room with completely crappy subwoofer?

I don't see what's wrong with 2.1. sound system? I have mine crappy ms for over 4 years and they do the job. It's not like they give out blast super-duper feeling of being in the movie crap, but they do the job. You can elen enchance them with audio sandbox to get the max of your woofer. If you want the above mentioned feeling buy genelec
(not to mention that some people don't have the necesary place for 5.1)

I actually use my Razer Barracuda HP-1 Headset most of the time when playing games or watching films. Its brilliant and has a better sound then my speakers...or at least I like to think so. The reason why I use them a lot is damage control visavis my family .

It's just that I have good stereo and i disdain shitty 2.1's and 5.1's, I'm all for music quality, not omgwtf roomquake.

Common mistake. Bass from normal speakers sounds better, I wouldn't be afraid of saying it's also stronger than subwoofer setups, but that would create unnecesary discussion. Oh wait, I just did .
I watch everything, and You'd be surprised how amazing and strong bass can be from decent, yet cheap stereo .
Take this for an example, very economic stereo for 150$ which surpasses all creatives, logitechs and antecs up to 500$ in sound quality. Butas everyone stated before, 5.1 is better for games and movies.
Of course there are also DIY's but completing such takes too much effort.
@Topic, it'd be good to know what sound card You have.

An equally common mistake is to think the bass from 'common' speakers is as good as a subwoofer. A very GOOD set of FULL RANGE speakers is usually better than a cheap sub. A GOOD sub with GOOD tweeters on a PROPER receiver is better than good full range speakers...

Goto a local store that sells that kind of stuff and ask them to demo their most expensive system for you. The bass is so warm and the range is perfect... Like.. a good stereo system if you can afford it is like upwards of 4k USD.

I really would prefer a 5.1 system but I have a very small desk with limited space. This is why I would like a 2.1 system with 2 speakers that I can just barely find space for on the desk and a subwoofer that I can leave on floor. I keep seeing Antec Lansing, Creative, Edifier, and Logitech speakers on the store shelves. Which band and model would give me a very good sound?

It's cool if you put the subwoofer on the floor right next to your racing pedals. When you accelerate you get vibrations

I have a set of Altec Lansing VS4121, they are pretty decent and pretty cheap (can be had for ~$70)... bunch of reviews here:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=11083&vpn=VS4121&manufacture=Altec%20Lansing
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836113017
So it really depends on how much money you want to spend. Those creative z-2300 are 2x the price.
