Don't get the Amazon one, because you can't put your own books on them, only Amazon's.
Any of the ones with an e-ink/e-paper screen are good, you can read them in full sunlight, just like a regular book, only page turning is a bit slow, takes like half a second. If you like gadgetty stuff, you'll want the Iliad with wifi and a bunch of user-created content, but the battery doesn't last very long, about a half a day to a day, other readers like the cybook last for like a month.

I was actually considering the amazon thingy but when I read the specs and how the content would work I got ipod flashbacks so that was out. Here's a good article about the different stuff available as of now.

Actually the whole website is dedicated to ebook reading and the author has the same problems as so many of us with reading ebooks off a computer or even a notebook screen.
Personally I'm going to wait and see how the umpc machines coming out feel like. The thing that spoils those as a reader is the keyboard, ergonomics and battery life. But if one comes out with a decent fold-away keyboard and battery life then I would prefer one of those. Play the odd mp3 now and then or check up on mail.
Edit - The second gen OLPC looked perfect but I don't think that thing is coming out anytime soon.

i looked into these a while ago for reading ebooks
common sense says that for simply reading text off an lcd or such the tech shouldn't cost more than $20
i think the cheapest i saw was $200
it's ridiculous
don't they think there's a market for these?

Ofcourse there is a market but the idiots who make these things are thinking an ipod kind of situation where they can chain the consumers forever into buying shit from them only. And besides the format hasn't hit the right spot. Either they're too bulky or too small while the solution is so obvious. They should make it the size of a paperback! Something along the lines of those PADDs in star trek but with a bigger screen area.

Not exactly an Ebook reader, but i use my NDS, R4DS card and "PictoDS" to convert pdf's to a format readable by "Comicbook DS".
Its like a sort of portable pdf reader. You can zoom, scroll, etc with the stylus.

I'm a happy owner of Sony Reader PRC 505. With the 1week old firmware update, they added support for a couple of new file formats & also PDF reflow. The battery holds for over 2week easily. All in all, a nice little device.

Yes, PRS you wiseass 
Displaying a PDF in normal font size (S for small) gives you an almost unreadable view. But once you increase the font size to M (in device, one button press), it reflows the document... kinda like wordwrap, but I guess it's more complicated than that. I read a couple of medical pdf's this way - they are usually formatted into 2-columns, but reflow-ed perfectly - no scrolling from side to side, so it's not a zoom-in.
A good read is on http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=100 - many ppl are commenting on the new firmware. I spent some time in this forums, before i decided to buy the device, it's a great resource.

I forgot, I'm also reading Bourne books (Bourne trilogy), in A4 formated pdfs, and they are also fully readable.
