|
 |
yesterday a friend of mine contacted a virus on his computer most likely from a downloaded keygen.exe! right after trying to execute the keygen his computer got a blue screen and after that, everytime WinXP was loaded, the system restarted.
today i went to his house in order to try and fix his PC, reinstalled WinXp and everything was almost fine after that. i must mention he has 2 Sata 160Gb HDD.
the main problem i saw was the fact that everytime i tryed accessing any of his drives (C,D,E...) they never oppened. the only way i was able to open them was by right-clicking and selecting Open. i have no idea why and what could cause that.
i must mention that after reinstalling Win, trying to enter the drives via duble-click (and failed obviusly) i tryed installing an anti-virus (KIS that did not open and a new screen (promo to some anti-virus program) appeared instead of desktop and made Task Manager unavailable (disabled). also one of the HDD "dissapeared". the weird thing is that he has 3 drives for every HDD (6 drives total) and i was able to see only 4 . after restarting the PC, it started again to restart without order everytime Win was loaded (always near the Welcome Screen of WinXP).
so, if anyone know anything on how i could fix this problem it would be great
PS: i have also wrote something at the Apps section, mainly related to the virus

Hmm, disable autorun, check for any autorun.inf files at the root of each partitions, unplug for now unneeded drives, check with some online antivirus, etc.
It may be better to just format and reinstall XP, then to install an antivirus before plugging back the others -unneeded to boot- possibly infected drives...

i have found out a few more things about the PC we are talking about. for example, one of the HDDs is quite new and WinXp is installed on that one. the older HDD it seems it had some problems in the past. i found out that one of the drives for that hdd has been created because there were some bad sectors and they have been alocated to that drive only. also in the past everytime those bad sectors were used in any way the computer also restarted winthout any provocation!
yesterday, i tried and successfully installed WinXp without any problems until i had to install an AV. managed to get the kitt from my computer and successfully installed it on that computer. the problems started soon after the computer restarted (needed in order to complete the install of the av). as soon as it showed me the welcome screen of Win, the PC restarted again without prior command, and continued that way over and over again. oh, after the requiered restart, while trying to turn on the AV, i got a blue screen (mainly saying "memory dump") the strange thing is it's only restarting after i installed the AV. any other program installed worked just fine before that.
from experience, i know that any AV in monitoring every drive it can detect and that viruses are not that selective (have a friend that says it's a virus but i kinda doubt it). what i am thinking is that the restarts always happen because the Av in trying to read those bad sectors. if it is like i think it is, can you tell me what to do? should i hide that partition and with what?
@$en$i: i haven't tried what you tell me above just yet but i am planning on disconecting the old HDD and try to install the Av without it. the main problem is that most likely after i reconnect the old HDD the PC will again start restarting because the AV will try to scan the bad sectors.

Try to disable "automatically restart" in "system" > Startup and recovery's settings
That way you will be able to write down the BSOD's error code and with it see what is causing that BSOD.
